We rented a pontoon from We Wan Chu for a day over this past Labor Day weekend. We ran out of gas after just 3 hours. In the middle of the lake. We are not boat people, so we assumed that we would have enough gas for more than a few hours. And no, we were not gunning it or running it full throttle at all. We called Peter, the owner, who was annoyed, i guess understandably. But we were annoyed that we would have run out of gas at all! (We think the tank was not full when we left, or maybe leaky gas line?). Anyhow, after about an hour, Peter came to rescue us but told us he "would not board until we gave him $180 in cash for a rescue fee, plus $35 for gas." We did not have that amount, but said we could settle up later." After he put in some gas, which then took another 15 minutes to start, he said it would not be enough to get us back to his marina! And we would have to stop somewhere else to get more gas. So he came to "rescue" us, but did not give us enough to get back! There is something off with this guy. …

We had a fabulous family vacation. We wanted to experience cottage life. We enjoyed our location (right on the water), boating (loved the depth and fish finder), local tourism (headed to National Comedy Museum), nightly fires, and charcoal grill. The kids enjoyed the beach area, swings, pool and open yard to play ball and yard games (we brought with us). We found staff extremely accommodating. It is simple living and is exactly what I remember cottage life to be. We found the brochure descriptions to be accurate. We found other cottage renters to be friendly and adhering to the safety and noise rules. We throughly enjoyed our stay - first timers here. We will be back!

My family has been going to We Wan Chu since the 1970's and we intend to keep returning. It is a great place for kids to swim, fish and be outdoors. The facilities and cottages are clean and comfortable. The pool is great option when the weather turns, the dock offers great views and fishing. My blood pressure drops as soon as I step foot on the property.

We have been going to WeWanChu Cottages for 19 years and staying in the same cottage. We stay for 2 weeks every summer and have also stayed for 3 weeks. We have also spent some fall weekends there. It is the best place on Chautauqua Lake to stay. The cabins are clean and the gounds and pool areas are always clean. The staff at WeWanChu is very friendly and work hard to maintain the grounds while not interrupting your stay. Peter is VERY accommodating and always wants to know if there is anything we need. He remodeled our cottage over the winter and it is beautiful. The hardest part about going to WeWanChu is having to leave and come home. We already booked for next year and counting the days until we return. Peter has become a great friend and part of our family.

we've been coming to we wan chu for years with our kids with another family and their kids. this is a very family friendly summer lakeside vacation. We have a great time and plan to keep coming back indefinitely. Many of the other families we meet are also long-term repeat guests (decades!). the staff and owner are very friendly and accomodating and the cabins are clean and comfortable. we enjoy boating and fishing daily, the indoor pool and hot tub, the beach with a floating dock for swimming, nightly bonfires, as well as local restaurants.

We Wan Chu, Peter, and all of his staff has become part of our family tradition for the last 26 years - I was just 4 years old when we came to CHQ for the first time and it has become the tradition or entire family has looked forward to for many years. Peter is friendly, accommodating, and quick to help if every anything needs addressed. He’s worked very hard to continue to update the cabins each year - I.e., new flooring, couches, TVs, and kitchen appliances (we are in C3). This is a vacation for people who like to be outdoors, enjoying all lake Chautauqua has to offer. Not a vacation for people who want to sit and watch TV. It may not be a fancy hotel, but I give it 5 stars because it is a wonderful, peaceful place to visit.

We have been coming to We Wan Chu for well over 20 years now. What attracted us was the beautiful location, amenities and family friendly atmosphere. Our family looks forward to their week at the lake every year. There is so much space and many things to do right here, but you also have so many other options for entertainment close by. The indoor heated pool is a big plus on rainy days. I don't think you can find a better place or better location for the money.

This is my second year of staying here. I stayed at several places in Chautauqua Lake. This was the best. I wish I would’ve found this years ago. It is a great place for friends and family children of all ages can enjoy this. There are so many things to do here. The indoors salt pool is huge and very nice for this when it may rain the children have something to do. Nice playground for the kids. Fishing was great. The staff is very friendly and helpful anything you need they are there for you. The second year we stayed there my coffee pot was leaking. I went up to tell Peter the owner did it was leaking without another word he went into the other room and got me a brand new coffee pot. Wow very clean and well taken care of. We love the campfire at night it got all the campers together to sit around and talk meet new people. Roasted marshmallows. . The only thing bad about this place was the day we were going home. We were very sad that we had to leave. But we will be back next year…

I’ve read some of the reviews that weren’t so good. I would like to disagree. I have stayed at many different locations for over 15 years on Chautauqua Lake. This is by the the nicest that I’ve been In. They have numerous things for everyone. The salt water pool is fantastic fir those who want to get out of the sun or on a cool or rainy day. A beach for the kids to build sand castles, a dock for jumping off and a small park for all the kids to meet and hang out. If you like to fish and don’t have a boat, there are boats you can rent. They have a horseshoe pit, volleyball net, a game room also. We wan chu has cabins that suit larger families and smaller families. They are well kept and clean. This isn’t a 5 star Ritz Carlton but it’s camping. If you are looking for that maybe don’t visit Chautauqua Lake because you won’t find it there. We had a couple cabins rented as there was a group of us. The owner was very accommodating. They have a large grass area that you can basically do whatever, which we had kickball games nightly. The staff worked hard keeping the place clean. I’ve stayed at places where other people have thrown the garbage all over, left cans, cigarette bursts etc... to me that’s disrespect to others. Check in is at 3. I called to see if I can get in earlier and Peter allowed me to because the other family left. That shows a lot. I always felt welcome as ALL the staff were great. Sometimes it’s the small things that matter and that’s why we will be going back next year for the 3rd time. The area and grounds are beautiful and well kept. Thank you to the We Wan Chu staff for making another year memorable. See you next year. …

If you go to We Wan Chu, this is exactly what you will get for 200+ per night: 1. shanty shack cabins with absolutely unreliable appliances, forcing most cooking to be done on a charcoal grill. 2. Bedding which is so old and God-awful that my family brings foam inserts, our own sheets, and our own pillows. The mattresses have never been replaced in the years I have been there, and this year I was forced to sleep in a separate bed 3. Cheap laminate flooring that is ripped, filthy dirty, moldy, cracked, and bubbling. Most cracks are fixed with caulk smears. The dust and mildew is so prevalent in the cabins, some of my family left early, it triggered an Asthma attack in my son, and clogged air filters (see picture). The filter was brand new on the first day of vacation!!!! 4. Every piece of furniture (save for a leather couch) is directly from 1977 and a random grandma’s garage sale. 5. A septic system which is so “crappy”, it overflowed into our shower two years in a row. We received a 100.00 discount off the next year’s security deposit once (which I had to beg for) after the owner insultingly claimed my wife was ignorant with her hygiene. 6. Lastly, and most importantly, you will find the cheapest owner you will encounter. He charges numerous and ridiculous fees whenever he wants to extract an extra nickel from his guests, nearly forces you to use his services/boats/etc., treats you like your six with his lengthy rule list and orientations, and is so unbelievably cheap he refuses to put any money back into the place!!!! He pushes his salt water pool like it is a panacea for the disgrace of a place he calls a “cottage resort”. He can’t even remove a yellow jacket nest!!! If you don't believe me, look at the pictures!!! Should be renamed We Wan ChoMoney…

Response from wewanchu, Owner at We Wan Chu Cottages
Responded Jul 31, 2019
Hello Everyone… We here at We Wan Chu Cottages address maintenance issues as quickly as possible when notified by our guests. Any issues that are reported to me are typically resolved, to the best of my knowledge. Otherwise; the recent issues that have been recently reported here would have been publicly reported prior to them choosing to stay with us for the SEVENTH YEAR OR during the week before they left. Not until after being informed that they weren’t allowed to return in 2020. In celebrating our 40th year Anniversary, we maintain a particular set of values that have made it possible for many families to enjoy their stay here at We Wan Chu Cottages. Unfortunately, there are individuals that do not maintain the same values that I feel are necessary for ALL individuals staying here at We Wan Chu Cottages. I support anyone who enjoys relaxing and getting together. However, I do not support: • loud and discourteous behavior after 11:00 PM and well into that 2:30 a.m. hour while other families are attempting to sleep • monopolizing facilities for personal use and alienating our other guests • damages in some cottages that were being occupied by this group’s families It should be noted that this complaint is from the very first person wishing to renew / rebook their Cottage Reservation for 2020 from this group of 20 cottages and it wasn’t until they were informed they were not allowed to come back to We Wan Chu that we began seeing complaints here on TripAdvisor after they have left. I know as well as our staff, that we are fortunate to have hundreds of guests and families - year after year returning to enjoy We Wan Chu. These families are singular or in smaller groups. These returning families and guests; Love We Wan Chu and know whenever they have noted an issue, we have done our best to fix or replace it as near instantly as possible. We also know it is tricky in painting and fixing everything. As a whole, we do believe our guests and families have an awesome positive vacation experience or else we wouldn’t have such a large renewal percentage from year to year, which speaks volumes when enjoying a Chautauqua Lake Vacation. I am not aware of any Cottages with mold or mildew and I am very anal in not having either in our cottages. Our rules are only there for the enjoyment and safety of our guests. I call them common sense rules and again, if they were an issue, no one would renew or rebook from year to year. This year we had guests returning from 33 years in a row, 29 years in a row on down. Some of my Best Friends are these guests and when they are leaving, puts a lump in my throat. As we look going forward in Life, we wish everyone that has come and gone a Great Vacation wherever You may go. We value everyone who stays with us once or year after year. Many people tell me time after time (especially our RENEWALS)- we have a wonderful staff that watches out for everyone’s well-being- on the property, dock, boat rentals and pool. Have a Great Day Everybody, Cheers & Hang Loose… Peter Wiemer
