We had a lovely stay in the Crystal House in Amapondo Backpackers. It was a sporty task to carry all our stuff up the 77 steps but we had a friendly helper from the staff. The hut is well equiped and even had a little stove to ease the winter chill. Most lovely views and a quiet escape from the... More

South African couple showing our British friends around. What a perfect stop for two nights en route from the midlands to PE. A real taste of the charms of the wild coast - with it's beautiful open spaces, ocean and welcoming people. It poured with rain most of the time we were there but we squeezed in a walk to... More

Wow, what an awesome review. It rained? What a pity. But some of those rainy days, overlooking the ocean, chatting and getting up to silly games at the bar, can be the most memorable. Our views really are spectacular. And our food and bar are the heart of Amapondo. We know our food is great, and well priced. Our staff... More

Came here for a lunch. We had to wait quite long for the food and told them afterwards. The manager sincerely apologised and seemed to care extremely about the wellbeing of his guests. He offered us a free night and we spend the evening drinking and hanging out at the bar. The bar guy of the evening was extremely relaxed... More

I distinctly remember you guys coming around and that you waited an unacceptable length of time for your food. I am deeply sorry for that. We had a new person training in the restaurant, and although that is not an excuse, it is a rare occurrence. However it all worked out in the end, you got a totally FREE night... More

Yet another afternoon relaxing at Amapondo after a long drive and work. Splendid filter coffee and toasted sandwich for late lunch. Buzzing with lots of visitors no space to stay left. Indicative of a good place to stay! You have to visit here if coming to Port St John's. Lovely beaches and mountains close by.

What a wonderful review. Pity we were fully booked though, but I hope you can stay with us next time you're in Port St Johns. Glad you enjoyed your meal at our super yummy, very affordable, Pondolicious Restaurant. Come again soon.... More

Was expecting a backpackers, but found a Gem. Friendly staff and patrons, a welcoming place in a lovely environment. Port St Johns offers a wealth of activities to do in the area. Waterfalls to sea life and stunning vegetation. Worth a visit again.

What a great review. We are truly a Gem, situated in the heart of the Wild Coast, the Jewel of the Transkei, Port St Johns. Nothing gets to us down here, we just love it. Thanks for coming and hope to see you again soon. More

Man, where do you even start with an amazing place like this? We weren't planning on staying in Port St John's as we road tripped down the coast, but we passed though and fell in love with Amapondo. Beautifully located against the hill overlooking second beach, Amapondo is everything a backpackers should be. We stayed in one of the self... More

We only stayed one night here as a stopover on an epic drive but it more than served its purpose of providing a comfy place to sleep, welcoming laid-back atmosphere and plenty of nice cold beers! Lush gardens, resident dogs, monkeys, cats and donkeys added to the charm and we found everyone to be super friendly and lovely. We stayed... More

Amapondo used to be my favourite backpackers in South Africa. Tim and Annie were the BEST hosts any traveler could wish for. But the new owners have changed the vibe. The music, food and general atmosphere was a let down compaired to previous years. Even the type of people who were staying at the backpackers were different from previous years.... More

Sorry, we can't please everyone. Amapondo still is my favourite backpackers in South Africa, and based on the large number of positive reviews, it still is for a lot of people. Tim and Annie are good friends of Amanda (my wife) and mine. The vibe has changed a bit since we have taken over, but for the better. Tim and... More

I was wholeheartedly welcomed into the Pondo family for one month in July/August of 2014. When I approached Neil for help on an anthropolgy honours research project he not only welcomed me to stay at Amapondo he also worked closely with me to form a relationship with the Isinuka Sulphur springs (a place of natural medicine and healing) wich are... Located in an area of luscious green trees and hills. The moment we arrived we felt the place had a nice vibe with music playing and a a place that attracts a relaxed bustling, kind bunch of backpackers. We stayed in bunks made of branches of wood and a comfy mattress. I stayed on the top bunk which was quite... More
