Coming from a 4* B&B we had to readjust, but in our 3-night-stay we learned to enjoy and eventually to love Amapondos Backpackers. Amanda and Neil run this place personally and with very much creativeness. Our cottage was cleaner and tidier as we would have expected in a backpackers. The atmosphere in the whole lodge is really great and unique,... More

Wonderful bar, food and accomodation. We had one of the cottages above the bar area, very quiet and very comfortable. Except that the mattress needs replacing - could feel the springs coming through! My only big gripe was one of the tours. I requested that I would like to do a village visit - as a tourist we are warned... More

There is a reason this part of South Africa is called the wild coast. Port St. Johns embodies that frontier feeling. It is a scrappy little town. It's chaotic, dusty and somewhat run down. But it's precisely those things that endear her to you. Amapondo gets under your skin and into your blood the same way. The thing they call... More

Hey guys, What a great review - honest and to the point. This place is magical. Only a few lucky few get to experience it. I firmly believe that this is a must-see for every foreign tourist travelling to South Africa. I am on holiday in Camps Bay, Cape Town right now. And though its gorgeous, fancy, posh, and glamorous,... More

I'm sitting here right now listening to some laid back tunes. Just watched the sun set at the beach about 200 metres away. I had a haloumi mushroom burger with chips and it hit the spot. The staff are chilled. Great place to pass the time.

Happy to hear you enjoyed our haloumi mushroom burger. They really do hit the spot. They're my favourite burgers, though all of our burgers are yummy. Good tunes at the bar! Fantastic. The bar staff really know how to please a crowd and set the right atmosphere. And the sunsets on the beach - don't get me started. Hope you... More

We camped here for 2 nights and loved it. The Donkey is a nice touch but do not get too close to him as he has a temper. Food was amazing and cheap. After having a look around Port St Johns this was the best place to be with views of the sea from our tent pitch. Staff are friendly... More

So glad you had a good time here. The food is amazing in our restaurant and we are quickly earning a reputation for one of the best places to dine in Port St Johns. Our donkey is lovely. She does not actually have a temper, she is just playful. If you get to know her a bit you'll understand. If... More

Stayed in Amapondo with a friend passing through on our way from Swaziland to Capetown, The setting is so beautiful, and the people and the feel of the place so relaxed, warm and welcoming that we ended up staying for 3 nights instead of just the planned 1. Although our trip we some time ago, I would heartily recommend Amapondo... More

Amapondo backpackers was everything I was hoping for, it has such a cool, relaxed vibe about it! The staff are so warm and friendly, and more than helpful with any I needed. During my stay I volunteered for the local projects they are running. I taught English at the crèche which was just a walk away and helped to paint... More

Suzie - Thanks so much for your wonderful contributions towards the Amapondo Children's Project. You came at a time when no other volunteers were around (which is not usual for us), and also our Project Manager was on leave. Nevertheless you got stuck in and gave of your time freely to the Mthumbane creche and the Eloxulweni Orphanage selflessly. Thank... More

I visited Amapondo as part of a large group and we loved our experience. The staff was so friendly, helpful, and accommodating. They worked hard in so many ways to ensure that we were entertained and enjoyed our stay. The facilities were cleaned regularly, the kitchen was fully stocked for those who wanted to cook, and there were so many... More

The food was excellent which was great as there aren't really any other choices around. Highly recommended as a very relaxing and affordable backpackers!
