This is a very old hotel. Built on the 70s. Rooms are damp and dim. Faulty plumbing. They provide only 1 towel in the room. Request for additional towel are rudely refused. They said all the rooms are full and no more towels are available! Restaurant service is slow. There is a swimming pool without water. more

We chose the hotel for its location on the lake. The town was without electricity for much of our visit there, so we shouldn't hold that against the hotel (unless they wanted to get their own generator as some places with inconsistent electricity supplies do!) Staff for friendly and as per my request had box lunches ready for us to... more

While I agree with the need to provide a heavy bit of slack for hotels outside Addis Abeba, the fact that several nice places have sprung up in the Ethiopian provinces over the last few years indicate that the landscape is changing. And that's a good thing. The Tana Hotel is a poorly run at best, a shambles at worst.... more

What travellers to Ethiopia desperately need is competition to the Ghion hotel chain. The Ghion hotel in Bahir Dar is bizarrely the only one on the lake shore, and while the location and grounds are great, the place is in need of a complete refurbishment. The staff are disinterested, bordering on rude. The food is like that of the rest of... more

This is a gorvernment run hotel, where the shabbiness of the communist era is well preserved. Staff are rude; ineffective. Food is terrible, and the bathrooms are filthy. The hotel is however set in a beautiful spot with a garden full of tropical birds. more

Considered as the premier location in Bahar Dar, the Tana is part of the government owned Ghion chain. As it often happens in this kind of institutions, guests can feel some “laisser aller” in the running of the hotel. We were brought from the airport by a so called attendant who happened to be a guy that works on his... more

This hotel is very dated, but this is not unusual for the Ghion Hotels chain. The hotel is clean yet inconveniently located. The big down side is that the staff are pretty much useless. They seem to go out of their way to have zero enthusiasm or personality. We stayed at this hotel for one night and transferred to the... more

This hotel is located by the LakeTana near the Bahir Dar University. It is not convenient to the town. We arranged for a taxi at the front desk and they quoted us a price. Once we came back to the hotel the taxi demanded triple fare. The hotel was built probably in the 60's or 70's. The style is quite... more

Let me start by saying the Tana was a pleasant place to stay. It certainly was not luxurious, and probably would look pretty sad next to a Motel 6 or any standard American chain motel. BUT, it's not in America, so the scale changes. It was reasonably clean, the food was OK, the staff was friendly enough, but the greatest... more

While I was dining with my group from Los Angeles, California, at the Tana Hotel, an awesome bird flew overhead above us. This bird was medium size with a tail of three feet of black and white feather bows that swayed up and down while it flew across the dining room to the other side up high in the rafters.... more
