We loved our stay at butterfly. We could almost jump into the lake from out chalet balcony, it really was beautiful. The staff are some of the friendliest I've met, giving the place a really happy and chilled vibe. Would definitely recommend.

We loved this place, it is a backpackers choice. We camped, 5 meters from the lake. Seriously awesome. People are relatively friendly. If you ask, they will help, but patience is needed. Thanks Butterfly.

Butterfly space did not feel like a hotel or even backpackers. Arriving there, it looked abandoned and unclean, their "beach" was full of rubbish and in generally seemed un-cared for. The rooms were basic and not very clean whilst their service was almost non-existent and poor. Although the lodge did seem to attract a large volunteer crowd, they seem to... More

I agree with Patrick. It is full of teenagers volunteering, nothing wrong with that, but if you are looking for a place to stay for a few days, go somewhere else. The place needs a lot of maintenance, cleaning, upkeep, etc... The toilets are compost and that is fine except that it is always out of the leaves and ashes... More

While Butterfly has a great location, the focus of the place seems to be on the volunteer opportunities available rather than on the Lodge/Backpacker experience (not that there is anything wrong with that). The entire Butterfly Lodge could use some investment in upkeep, cleanliness, and organization. If you are looking to volunteer and work with the community during your travels,... More

Having just finished my travels, I will remember fondly of this place. Felt very welcomed from the start and the have some really good community projects which they run so you gain an insight into how life is in this part of the world. They introduced me to a local school were I stayed for 3 weeks to help assist... More

I stayed at all three of the Backpacker places in Nkhata Bay and this was by far my favourite. I had my own little cabin with a lakeside view for a very reasonable price. The atmosphere is lovely and they have hot showers - which you don't get next door - and reasonably priced food. The community work done here... More

I walked into butterfly and instantly felt part of the family. Alice and Josie were so welcoming. The rooms are clean and have great views over the lake. As a single traveller you can really get to meet and know people here with the communal meals and friendly atmosphere. Alongside the lodge there are a number of incredible volunteer projects... I have just recently left Butterfly after an incredible 5 month stay where I volunteered in the various community development projects which are at the very heart of this lodge. It was a pleasure and a very rewarding experience to be involved in such positive community work, whether that be teaching in the primary school onsite or coaching football to... More

I stayed for a few nights in my own little wooden 'chalet' (the one on the photo), private balcony, lost in the tropical trees bordering the lake. Direct access to the lake where the waves crash gently all day and night giving a real oceanic feel to the place. The staff becomes friends, the dining space your living space, the... More
