I stayed for one night at Butterfly Space and I was so disappointed when arriving after such a long journey. I had really been looking forward to my stay here, I expected a chilled place with some lounging areas but the place felt really quiet and empty and kind of run down. My room was very dirty and there were... More

Butterfly lodge was a great place to stay for a few nights; we learnt Bao, met some friendly locals and indulged in the wonderful food served during the day. The communal meal in the evening is a nice touch to get to know other travellers and the decking area around the bar was a great place to relax. We stayed... More

What an atmosphere! I loved the eco-friendliness of the place as well as their idea of volunteering in partner with the lodge. Basic accommodation but good in relation to price and location. Can't wait to see what the future brings for butterfly space.

Great villas on the water, ok food. A nice place to chill on the deck and have a beer or g&t. Crystal clear water for a swim with plenty of small fish around. In walking distance from town. Even if arriving after dark. Big friendly smiles from the man at the reception

Where do I start? Butterfly Space, the other semi-long-term volunteers, Alice and Josie make this place the most happy place ever. Positioned on the 'lake of stars' lay back at night at be amazing at the sky and watch fisherman with gas-lamps in the distance. Next to another more expensive -less friendly- backpackers, so can pop there for the food... More

This relaxed friendly lodge is an incredible place - a beautiful mix of volunteers involved in Butterfly's community projects and tourists relaxing on the lakeshore. Butterfly has many things going for it - excellent location with a private beach, good value for money, excellent food, environmental sustainability, the list goes on. But above all these things is the unique community... More

As with any backpackers, the atmosphere is heavily dependent on the people there at the time, but butterfly seems to have this sussed especially due to the small group of semi-permanents here who live, work and / or volunteer in the area! We used the ensuite, the only room with a shower and toilet. Dinner is at the chefs whim,... More

Butterfly Space isn't for everyone but I thought it was great. It is run as an ethical community project funded through the lodge activities which makes it a very friendly and inclusive place to stay with high environmental standards throughout the grounds. The huts are really quaint and the view of the sunrise over Mozambique is sublime. Food is great... More

Butterfly Lodge is a great place ideally located on the beautiful Lake Malawi. The lodges are nestled into the hills running down to the lake and can make use of the lodge bar/restaurant, shower and toilets. The lodge has a sustainable ethos and the facilities are designed as such. The lodge owner was friendly and the staff helpful and welcoming.... More

Josie and Alice co-owners of Butterfly have worked hard to create this not for profit volunteer lodge and are very hands on. Each morning staff were seen sweeping and cleaning all the communal areas & the compost toilets always had ash and leaves available. I stayed for 2 weeks while visiting my daughter who is on a 12 month volunteer... More
