My wife and I took advantage of an overnight package that included passes to any event, dinner, brunch and of course the room. If you go, keep in mind the hotel was opened in 1881 so it does not have all the modern amenities. However, the room was clean and comfortable, a little small, but dinner was fabulous and the... It's been some years since we last stayed at the Athenaeum, but my wife and I were there this past weekend for a wedding AND MY HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED! The last time we stayed there this old matron of a resort hotel (built in 1881 and totally Victorian) looked a bit down at the heels. The building itself (one... More

This hotel has wonderful views, a grand porch with rockers, and old fashioned but comfortable rooms, our room had a modern bath, large closet and bay windows. We were on the third floor and I walked up and down for the exercise and the challenge, but there is a small elevator. The big change in the hotel in the last... More

We had a one-night package at the Athenaeum that included gate passes, parking, dinner and breakfast and the Saturday evening concert in the Amphitheatre. The dinner in the new Heirloom dining room was unexpectedly wonderful. Service was accommodating both in the dining room and at the hotel desk and concierge as well as at the Institution's front gate. The room... More

Housekeeping was lacking. We had to call the front desk as soon as we entered our room. The shade was fully extended to the point that it fell below the bottom of the window. Although there were plastic pulls, we could not succeed in getting the shade pulled up so that we could have a little light in the room.... More

We were lucky enough to be able to spend the weekend on Lake Chautauqua at the Chautauqua Institute and have accommodations in the historic and charming Athenaeum Hotel. The institute is someplace that should be investigated, and most possibly added to your bucket list if you have not been there. Many people go every summer and spend the entire summer,... More

Buffet open to those not staying at the hotel. More casual than in the past. Attentive wait persons. Nice splurge at least once during a week at the Institution, if only to have coffee and use their Wifi from a rocker, as we noticed some in the know doing.

The people who run this hotel should be prosecuted for highway robbery. The hotel is disgusting, old and full of dust. They charged me $452 for a room that I would not pay $39 for. Right now I am taking a Zyrtec because my mold and dust allergies are being set off by this disgusting cesspool.

Chautauqua Institute is a world-class educational and cultural center very poorly served by its central accommodation, the Athenaeum Hotel. From the outside, an exquisite gem on the Lake. Step thru the doors, shabby service and shabbier decor abound. Front desk was surprisingly unhelpful. We left a sweater in the restaurant and deskclerk told us to climb back to campus entrance... This was my second stay at this hotel. It is always a pleasure. The service from the young staff is wonderful. Get a room overlooking Lake Chautauqua. Be prepared to hear conversation on the porch below. They have updated the bathrooms, but rooms are still quaint. Breakfast is included in the European plan. The buffet is all right. Your best...
