The Retreat at Groenfontein literally “off the beaten track” and well worth the detour. Being secluded and operating on solar energy, thus being a “green resort” is a few of the reasons why we have chosen it to spend our private time together. Hidden in a valley deep in the Swartsburg Mountains it has magical and serene atmosphere. The views... More

After our enjoyable stay a year ago at the Retreat we decided to start mid-February our holidays at this beautiful and isolated lodge in the Swartberg area. An excellent place to start ‘unwinding’ and the owner Marie booked us in one of the suites close to the lake filled with turtles and breathtaking views over the mountains. This time we... More

This is the ultimate place to kick back and do absolutely nothing. Hills all round if you want to stretch, sweet people to cook for you and bring you coffee, a river to swim in if you go in summer or you're very brave. Total peace and tranquility. Marie and Grant make everybody so welcome and are always ready for... More

An excellent spot to stay close to Caliztdorp. The rooms are very well appointed and the owners get great delight from looking after the needs of the guests, The food was excellent and the wine very fairly priced. Wonderfully reote, beautiful environment, lots of walks to do or simply enjoy the place and the wonderful birds that prevail. Really good... More

This should probably have been written a year ago but it's never too late......The Retreat was one of the highlights of our wonderful trip to South Africa last year! Off the beaten track (think more 'Out of Africa' than the usual guest house) and so worth the extra few miles. The scenery, walks and hospitality were unforgettable. The food amazing,... More

As others say the drive here from the main road is slow and can be a little bit of challenge in a hire car (after rain) but worth it. The setting is pretty unique and the evening meal was quite different to that you normally experience at a guest house, Good food and the opportunity to mix with people. My... More

We stayed only one night, probably should have booked another night to enjoy the surroundings. It's a slow drive from the nearest highway, but worth the effort. Excellent hiking in the surrounding hills. We enjoyed the communal meals, talking with the other guests, the owners and staff.

A long drive along a dusty track is so worthwhile when arriving at the Retreat. The house is delightful, the accommodation perfect. Brakfast and dinner are communal events so there is plenty opportunity for conversations with fellow guests and the owners, Grant and Marie, This may not suit if you are shy and retiring but we loved it. An ideal... More

The retreat is set in the most enviable position, the setting is remote and the views of the surrounding mountains are wonderful. Unfortunately the temperatures were almost topping 40 when we were there so we didn't get to do as much walking as we would have liked. Also a 2 day stay was enough for us as there isn't much... I'm very sorry that you came at a time when the temperatures were too high for you to do as much walking as you would have liked. I do always recommend to guests to walk before breakfast when the temperatures are lower during the hot months, it is really the only time in summer to walk! Many of our guests... More

From the moment you arrive at The Retreat, you know you have made a good choice. Everything about the place is heavenly. The scenery, the accommodation, the hosts, the dogs, the food, the gardens and the staff. Nothing is too much trouble for anyone and attention to detail abounds. Grant and Marie are not only kind and caring but also... More
