My wife and I stayed here mainly to ride the train, of course. We enjoyed the coziness, quaintness and the helpfulness of the staff. It was nice to be able to open the windows and enjoy the cool mountain air (July), listen to the evening rain on the balcony, and relax in a place that had much less of the... More

What do you say about a place that has problems, yet you really like it and would return to it? It has such a great "feel" to it - the proprietor gives you that "just folks" sense. O.K., it's an old hotel, with oak floors, wood paneling, older plumbing fixtures (green pedestal sink), ungrounded 2-prong electrical outlets. Rooms are small,... More

I'm expressing my frustration on this review which was uncalled for. I had made a reservation and was gonna arrive late, I was instructed that a note would be on the window stating which room I'd be in and with the keys in there too. I was to ride the train with my date the next day, but to my... More

If you stay at the Hotel and Shops long enough, or frequently enough, you become part of the family. The owners go out of their way to make sure that your stay is clean, affordable, and above all, happens in a friendly environment. Travelers should keep in mind that the Hotel and Shops is a historic building. So you won't... More

this was my first trip to chama, to ride the train, and won't be my last. I spent two nights at THE HOTEL[sometimes referred to as the old railroad hotel] and really enjoyed it. if you want to enjoy a hotel from the '30s this is it. except for the gift shop, the entire place is like a museum. that... I've been going to Chama for several years to enjoy the railroad and small-town atmosphere. The Hotel is my preferred place to stay. Yes, it's old. Yes, the floors creek. Yes, the rooms are small. And those things make it part of an enjoyable experience. The Hotel is a remnant of a different time and that's part of the reason... More

...if you're not a fancy person and would like to stay in a genuine railroad hotel then this is the place for you. Barbara and Rodger are great hosts who always make you feel welcome. I love the Hotel and Shops!

The Hotel is well kept and as clean as you will find and the owners are excellent hosts. Yes, it's an older hotel and the bathroom was a little small, but so what? It was clean, everything worked, and the price is a bargain. There is a public computer and printer but I didn't need them. I saw others use... More

The bad news: The Hotel (AKA The Railroad Hotel) is a tattered, run down, no frills place. The good news: It feels the way a tattered, run down, no frills place might have felt in the 30's, and you were on a Depression era budget. So at least you'll be staying in historical squalor rather than mere contemporary squalor. Other... More

This hotel is located in an old building in downtown Chama. The rooms are on the 2nd floor and there is a gift shop at ground level. Upstairs, there is a balcony on the front and the rooms are located on both sides of a hallway. It reminds one of a hotel from the forties. However, it has wifi and... More
