Frequently, "historic" hotel disappoint when it comes to modern conveniences and guest amenities. This is NOT the case with The Hotel Portsmouth. The historic charm is complimented perfectly with the expectations of today's discerning traveler. , Well-appointed rooms, fantastic bed, modern baths with reliable plumbing, fast and free WiFi and staff who say "my pleasure" instead of "no problem" all... The Hotel Portsmouth was the perfect place for our 3 night stay. It is close enough to walk to just about everything in the downtown area including the fabulous restaurants and shops as well as the historic sites. The Deluxe King room we stayed in was handsomely decorated in soothing grays and blues with pops of color like the mustard... More

I'd never been to Portsmouth before and just decided at the last minute to reserve a room here. When I saw the historic building, I was afraid it would be "charming" and stuffy. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in. It is absolutely perfect. It's had a stylish renovation and every detail works. I loved the bed, I loved... More

Beautiful old hotel with charm & hospitality. Wonderful staff and beautiful public rooms with an old Beautiful library and sitting room. The breakfast is served in a very attractive eating area with delicious food and great coffee. Our room was quaint but somewhat sparsely furnished. The location couldn't be better and right down the street from the center of the old... More

The Hotel Portsmouth is such a unique and great place to stay. We booked a room at the last minute and were pleasantly surprised by the overall experience. The location is great--easy walking distance to just about everything, yet not in a crowded area. There is convenient parking behind the hotel too. When you walk in, you are greeted by... More

My husband and I were driving from the furthermost reaches of Maine to New York City, and needed a place to spend the night; we chose the Hotel Portsmouth. I was delighted when I made the reservation; the proprietor and I shared the same first name, which instantly endeared him to me. But once we arrived at the property, I... More

Comfortable & convenient . This historic inn , located in the heart of Portsmouth affords a delightful respite from the confines of a typical corporate hotel stay. Clean, tasteful decor, attention to detail without being pretentious, friendly staff - staying at the Hotel Portsmouth is a must.

The Portsmouth is more like a B&B than your typical hotel. Its 32 rooms, comfortable if a bit small, are simply but tastefully furnished. In lieu of a lobby there are two parlors, pleasantly retro, with such non-standard amenities as the Encyclopedia Britannica (other books as well), and two chess boards ready for action. There’s beautiful wood paneling throughout the... More

This hotel was wonderful for our family. The top floor suite had a separate room with a king and bunk beds in the main room. Staff was extremely pleasant. Hotel was great - well kept and held to its original roots. Easy walking distance to strawbery Banke and downtown, in the heart of things yet a bit quieter.
