The location in the heart of easy to walk around Portsmouth makes up for a smallish tho adequate room, no view and steps only access. Bed and bath is ok, one chair for reading, common access area spartan and not cozy. No breakfast though fruit provided. Parking helpful but you have to leave by 11 including the lot. Bottom line,... The Ale House Inn is a splendid, small, carefully managed undertaking that outdoes itself at every turn. Much of that painstaking quest for excellence is attributable to the property's General Manager, who is truly at the top of her game. The rooms - and we stayed in two of them during our visit - are beautifully appointed with Asian or... More

We had a one night stop over en route to Canada and decided to stay at this inn. It was very comfortable and close to town. The evening self check in process was easy, but access to the parking lot across the street was a little confusing. I noticed after we left that they explained it on the back of... More

We were traveling to Portsmouth for a friends wedding and they recommended the Ale House Inn as a place to stay, so glad that they did! This hotel felt as though we were staying with friends. The rooms were comfortable and easy going. Parking was included with the room, a must for Portsmouth. The ability to use bikes from the... More

Great location, room and bathroim great. Walking distace to great food, shops harbor, park, and history. Only drawback is very thin walls. We could hear the guy in the next room snoring and anything a guest said in the hallway. Also no view. I would definately stay again though .

This is our second visit to this inn and we love the location and the small number of rooms. It is like having your own private place. We took advantage of the free theater tickets on this visit and the show was great. Portsmouth is also a great place for a romantic weekend away and we recommend staying here!

It's great to hear from guests who used the free theater tickets! Most guests enjoy the free welcome beer, but not everyone takes us up on the theater tickets, bikes or discounted local deals. We're so pleased that our unique amenities and unusual property are a good fit for you and that our central downtown Portsmouth location keeps you coming... More

I agree with all the other positive reviews. Great location near everything. Crisp, new, stylish inn. Extremely comfortable bed (and I'm the princess and the pea type). The small Queen room was no problem for us; it is akin to what you would find in a boutique hotel in NYC or a European capital. Friendly, helpful staff. No view from... More

Well, it certainly is a compliment for our beds when a "princess and the pea" type gives them a thumbs up! We're so pleased that you had a great experience at our Portsmouth boutique inn and that our central location, friendly staff and crisp style hit the mark with you. Please visit the Ale House Inn again the next time... More

I stayed here for one night mid week in July with my husband for a mini getaway. Parking was free and in a church lot close to the hotel. We didn't have to move our car at all, although I think there are some restrictions for Thursdays and Sundays. The general manager couldn't have been nicer and we were able... More

We're so pleased that you had a lovely stay and that our awesome downtown Portsmouth location and amenities provided value for your visit. We love it when guests use the bikes and enjoy how detailed the local information is on our in-room iPads. We greatly appreciate your recommendation and thoughtful words and look forward to your next visit to the... More

WOW, did not expect to find this in Portsmouth, NH. Very reminiscent of small a boutique hotel in Soho NYC. The moment they check you in you are given you a few great beers to enjoy. They have complimentary snacks in the lobby and are located steps from great water views, food and shopping. They have someone on call from... More

The Ale House is a comfortable and attractive hotel, although we were left with mixed feelings after our one-night stay there. I think the inn is caught between two property types, and its pricing is not entirely in keeping with what it actually offers. The $200+ per-night rate leads one to expect high-end amenities, and this expectation is met with... More

Thank you for your review and detailed thoughts. We're pleased that you had a pleasant experience at Ale House Inn despite your frustrations and that you found our rooms to be comfortable with nice decor, linens, bath products and high-tech amenities. It is true that in the busy summer, some minor upkeep items such as paint scuffs are tough to... More
