I wanted to introduce my kids to hiking and my son's personal goal is to do all 48 of the 4K footers in NH. The AMC is having a special where kids stay for free this summer at Lonesome Lake. This worked perfect as otherwise we would not have spent the money for the 4 of us to stay there.... More

We spent a night here in mid-January of 2014. There is a hut master and hot coffee and tea and some snacks (brownies and trail bars) available but you are expected to pack in your own food. The hike from the Lafayette camping ground parking lot is about an hour with a 20-30 lb pack (we were in reasonably good... More

We just returned from a two hut AMC adventure with our 11 year old granddaughter. Our first two nights were spent at Greenleaf Hut and while that was a good experience (although cold for June) our experience at Lonesome Lake was topnotch. The literature tells you that the 1.6 mile hike up from the Lafayette Campground is easy. Well, it... More

In the summer this is a full service hostel with breakfast and dinner provided as well as a bunk, blanket and pillow. In the fall, winter and spring it is self service where you have access to the large kitchen and you need to bring a warm sleeping bag. We did this in the fall and it is backpacking made... More

My boyfriend and I were invited by our friend who is a caretaker at the cabin to come for an early Thanksgiving dinner with a bunch of friends. The hike up wasn't too difficult, though it had it's steep spots and icy spots (bring some microspikes or hiking poles in the winter). We are fairly experienced hikers and it took... More

The Coo are very relaxed. You feel that you just walked into your own mountain hut. The Common area wraps around an open and friendly kitchen. There were 3 moose in the area. There is a board walk which completely surround Lonesome Lake which permits on to see and experience the delicate eco-system of the area without damaging it. The... More

Fun family hike and great place to stay. Beginner trail but still challenging enough to make it interesting. (Little over 2 hours up and about 1:20 down.) Brought my wife (her first hike) and 7 yo daughter who insisted on leading the way. Lots of fun. The hut was way better than expected. Very clean (cleaner than the hotel we... More

Four of us stayed here for a short backcountry outing. The hut is probably one of the nicest and most spacious of all the AMC huts, and it's highly recommended if you looking to experience a bit of the back-country without packing the tent and stove - and it's great with kids. Here is the scoop: It's a ~2.3 mile... More

Lonesome Lake is a great place to take the familyt to experience the beauty of the mountains without the hassle of camping. The facilities are clean, although spartan, and the food is excellent. My son loved the hike up (took 2 hours). We spent the afternoon walking around the lake and read a book on the dock. He swam in... More

Our first trip to an AMC hut and it was fabulous! A short but steep hike starting at Lafayette Campground leads you to this charming "hut" on serene Lonesome Lake. We got there and checked into our bunkhouse, which had been recently updated. We had a room with double bunks for the four of us so we did not have... More
