I had the great pleasure of staying at the Shakespeare Chateaux in the Verona Suite. From the beginning, I knew my husband and I were in for a rare treat when the owner, Isobel, gave us an extensive tour of the home and a fabulous history lesson about the house and the town. We drank in her stories along with... More

This was our first visit to Shakespeare Chateau, but the welcoming feeling Isobel offered throughout our visit made us feel as though we had been there before and had known each other longer. She provided an informative overview of the history and restoration of the house and surrounding neighborhood, made us feel "at home" and presented us an enjoyable breakfast... More

This property is a treat for the eyes. Beautiful!!! The rooms are comfortable and clean. Note that although there are fireplaces, they are NOT functioning. We were disappointed that we could not have a cozy evening fire. (We visited in the winter earlier than the 'when did you travel?' question allowed) Would have appreciated a comment from Isobel stating they... More

Thanks for staying with us last winter, and for posting your review on TripAdvisor. I'm pleased that you found your guest room clean and comfortable. Each of our rooms is individually climate-controlled for heating and A/C to ensure my guests' comfort at all seasons. Fire code, insurance restrictions, and reasonable prudence keep me from using the 130-year-old fireplaces in the... More

This was our second stay at this fabulous location. The innkeeper could not be more friendly and our room (Twelth night) was fantastic. Isobel accommodated our breakfast special request -we are vegetarians. The newly restored dinning room is a must see. The elegance of the mansion and historic American city are well worth seeing. Thank you for making our trp... More

Thank you for opening your beautiful home for my son and his new bride to take their wedding pictures. We had beautiful backdrops for their pictures and I can't wait to share them with you. We have had some beautiful brides recently at the Shakespeare Chateau! This historic building is flush with original detailing - woodwork, stained glass, mosaic and parquet floors, and more - and virtually every room is a fabulous photo "backdrop," especially for brides. Thank you for choosing to make the Shakespeare Chateau part of your son and daughter-in-law's memorable day! More

My husband and I set off on a spur of the moment get away. Traveling south on I-29 headed towards KC, MO, we knew we had better start making some lodging plans. Thanks to our handy dandy smartphones we did just that. We decided to continue with our spontaneity and head for a bed and breakfast in St. Joe. We... More

Very fun to see & stay in such a historical place. Exquisite floors, woodwork, and furnishings. Our room was comfortable and clean. A bit pricey, for one night!! We hoped for more shopping in the area, and our meal at the suggested restaurant, was just okay...Our breakfast left a lot to be desired, as well...Not impressed, as I guess we... More

Had a great time! Isabel was very nice and helpful with suggestions on things to do and or see. Also great advise on dining. The Romeo and Juliet room was beautiful and clean. The house (or I might say mansion) itself is architecturally outstanding! I highly recommend a stay at the Shakespeare Inn Bed & Breakfast in St. Joe, Mo.... More

This Victorian mansion was built to impress and continues to today. The inn keeper Isobel was very friendly and gave us a great personal tour of the mansion. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The majestic Shakespeare Chateau was built in 1885 by Nathan Ogden when St. Joseph Missouri was known as "The Queen of the River Cities." High atop a bluff looking down across the city toward the Missouri River, 809 Hall Street is one of several mansions in the Hall Street Historic District known locally as "Millionaires' Row." You'll enjoy meeting the friendly innkeeper, Isobel, as she takes you through the palatial interior. You'll marvel at 47 (yes, 47!) original stained glass windows, carved cherrywood and walnut mantles, and of course, a bust of the Bard himself above the grand fireplace in the front foyer. But most of all, you'll enjoy our comfortable sleeping rooms, each one beautifully appointed with fabulous art and antiques and luxurious linens. ... more   less
