When I walked into the Archer House, my heart sank. Remodeling of some sort was going on, and the lobby looked run down, and none too clean. The carpet to the elevator was stained and greasy, and I thought I had made a big mistake choosing quaint over chain. But my room, while lacking in flat surfaces to set things on,... more

Reminds me of a modest hotel in French Quarter New Orleans -- the rooms truly seem unique, each one different in layout and antique-like furnishings. They have cute evocative names. The nice small lobby had antiques and smelled a bit like curry from the attached Indian restaurant. Great location, near the strip of boutique shops and short walk to the... more

Tons of character & the most comfortable bed ever in a hotel. The climate in the room was perfect--considering the winter freeze outside. Convenient to walk to Carleton College and small town shops. Quiet, clean & restful. Excellent wireless service. more

The Archer House is far from a perfect hotel, but I will go so far as to say that it is perfectly suited to the type of person that is willing to overlook some small faults for the sense of gentility, repose, and history that the Archer House provides. I'm sorry, but Type A personalities that complain about a little... more

The Archer House is a charming hotel with a long history in the beautiful town of Northfield. It has great old woodwork and a huge porch. Food in the downstairs Indian restaurant is of the best in town. While the fun, old world atmosphere makes it easy to imagine visitors from the 1910's staying there, it's not the most modern,... more

The location is extremely convenient for people visiting Carleton College. It's a short easy walk. No need for a rental car. Accommodations are quite simple but completely adequate. The Indian restaurant off the lobby is excellent. There is also a nice cafe amost adjacent as well as a tavern in the walkout basement that serves breakfast. Within a block or... more

Stayed at the Archer House not so much by choice, but simply because all other (less expensive) options were full. Still, we read the reviews here and expected a good experience. We're definitely the sort of folks who like (prefer, actually) older buildings, and would not have been put off by any hotel characteristics that are age-related. Having said that,... more

My overall experience at the Archer House was above average--even approaching excellent--but that does not mean everybody's experience would be. This place definitely is not for the kind of traveler who looks for stuff to complain about in a hotel. It is a fun, charming, historic place with a great deal of character, but it is not long on luxury-type... more

We recently stayed at the Archer House in the Anniversary Suite. Most reviews describe the hotel as quaint and cozy. The Anniversary Suite has a sitting room, bedroom, and bath with a double whirlpool. We thought it would be romantic...it's called the Anniversary Suite, after all. In reality, the hotel is best described as worn and our room was awful... more

I had a lovely weekend at my friends' wedding and stayed at The Archer House. I was pretty content at checkout --- despite the hefty bill. Unfortunately, when i returned home, I found that in the rush of packing for a timely checkout I left something behind. I contacted the hotel by phone and spoke with someone who said that... more
