We reserved several room as part of a wedding. We don’t usually leave bad reviews as we think maybe it was just an “off day.” But we were here three nights. We can only speak to the rooms in the 200 numbered area. The rooms are cramped. Maybe 12x12 at most 15x15. Our room and a couple others only had two hooks upon which to hang clothes. There isn’t a dresser for clothes unless you count the side table. We got there as it finished raining and with no rug inside or outside the door we tracked water in to unload, necessitating using one of the hand towels. The bathroom is tiny but functional. Our neighbors room had a small couch which was covered in dog hair. The housekeeper we observed takes her dog in with her when she works. We were locked out of our room as the key wouldn’t work. The first time we jiggled the key in the front door for 10 minutes and the back door for 5 minutes. Went to the office. Owner told us to jiggle the key. He begrudgingly went and couldn’t get the front door to work. After 5 minutes he opened the back door. Told us not to slam the front door, which we hadn’t. After the wedding it took 15 minutes to get the front door open. Couldn’t unlock the back door. We know how to work keys. There isn’t staff there in the evening, you must call. The hot water took a long time to heat up. There is no office type chair to use. The thermostat didn’t regulate. We had to sleep with the window open as the room was 80+. Checked out and owner asked how things were and I told him in not an aggressive way. He said he spent 30k on remodeling. I said the room looks fine but the problems were not good. I said we did plan to come back. He told me to, “Get Out.” My parting shot was it wasn’t worth $180 a night. I’m glad others before our group felt differently , as we are mom and pop supporters, but not this place. They do offer free bike rental and free tickets to the zoo.

Made a reservation through BringFido and checked to make sure there was no pet size restrictions (there were none listed, just a very reasonable $25/night fee). My husband drove up with one of our dogs from Texas to go see his mom (didn't want to inconvenience her by staying at her place). Hubby shows up, finds out they changed his room from a double to a Queen (including the additional rate charge) and they had a problem with a large dog. The rudeness from whomever was "in charge" was unacceptable. He told my husband "if you don't like it you don't have to fu**ing stay here". My husband drove to his mother's and I called BringFido to make sure we were not charged and to get our trip insurance refunded. The person I spoke with at BringFido called the Willard Munger Inn and got attitude as well. I applaud Bringfido, as they provided exemplary customer service. Too bad I can't say the same for the Willard Munger Inn. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone.

So I actually stayed in March '21 but the dumb A.I. would not let me type it in. When I relocated from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Duluth, Minnesota I stayed at Munger Inn on a monthly basis. Jeff was so hospitable as was Glinda in making my stay perfect. They were so kind and inviting. It was a strange time to relocate at the beginning of COVID. It was interesting too. The room was always superbly clean, staff were friendly and helpful. I always felt safe and Jeff was more than willing to accommodate any requests I had --which were not many as I got such a great deal and he allowed me a patio room which made it all the better. I felt so welcome in my new hometown and the Munger Trail was right outside my door. I could not complain. I enjoyed coffee in the morning watching the hawks, with my pet cat safely peeking out. It was warm in the winter and I got a portable heater when needed. I had free internet, warm showers, cable and occasionally a comped dinner. Jeff and Glinda were always willing to tell me about the fun and cool places to go in Duluth, which were plentiful. I am grateful I chose the Munger Inn to stay in and I feel that in life nothing is an accident and I will always warmly remember my most friendly, clean, cabin like comfortable stay at a most down to earth place - the Munger Inn. I would highly recommend it. If you want to be waited on hand and foot and sit near a pool Munger Inn is not the place for you. It is not an easy time for small business owners and we should all remember ENTITLEMENT does not guarantee anything. We are in strange times and while I was there I felt like I was going back to my country roots with that small town feel and genteel amiability. Not for Karens.

I called the inn and made the reservation. I was so impressed with down home feeling after talking about all the amenities. I was very surprised that free bikes were available and free pass to the zoo. After hearing what I needed he told me about room 216, how it had a BBQ and a fire pit. I was so happy to find everything was as described and so quaint. It felt like a cabin in the woods. The second night someone started the fire for us. This inn was wonderful and I would stay there again!

I was more than impressed by my one-night solo stay at the Munger Inn. The room was cozy and extremely clean and I had some of the largest and softest towels of any hotel I've ever stayed at. The room had a northwoods theme throughout, which added charm. Check-in was quick and easy and I liked the location on the edge of Duluth, in a quieter part of town away from Canal Park. If you're looking for a simple, clean, locally-owned motel, I highly recommend the Munger Inn. For the price, you can't beat it!

On a positive note the room was nicely decorated and clean. The motel offered free passes to the Lake Superior zoo which is a wonderful zoo and the use of bicycles. However, I give this motel a 2 because of the lack of hospitality at check-in. The owner, Jeff, was drunk, red eyes and face, slurred speech, and couldn't walk straight. When we told him our names, he couldn't find the reservation because he couldn't see straight. I told him we had reservations months ago. He then said, "don't be a Karen." I was shocked. He finally figured out our reservation and complained that we got there so late. It was 11 pm. My husband said we had a long drive and worked during the day. I did not say anything else to the owner and he proceeded to call me Karen two more times! I then told him to stop calling me Karen, that's rude. He apologized. Despite his apology, we've never been treated so rudely by a motel owner and never been checked-in by someone so drunk. It also was very overpriced at $166/night. We would never stay there again.

The owner was very personable. The room was fantastic. Little features like carved moose in the furniture was a nice touch. It was clean and comfortable. Free bikes are available for use on the Willard Munger Trail, which is just 100 feet from the motel.

I was a little uncertain going in as there were not many recent reviews, but we really enjoyed our stay at the Willard Munger Inn. Everything was exactly as described with the exception of breakfast (no breakfast currently). Some of the reasons we selected this location were price, the zoo pass, and the free bikes. The bikes are in great condition and were perfect for a ride to Jay Cooke State Park and back on the Willard Munger State Trail which starts right behind the Inn. The Lake Superior Zoo is lovely, and we were able to walk there as it's just down the block and gain free entry with the pass. The room was extremely clean. Even though you can tell it's an older property, you can also see it's been well cared for. The sheets were soft, and the towels were thick. The location is just a few miles south of a very up-and-coming area with loads of craft breweries and food trucks, and just another mile or so is Canal Park and the downtown area. In a few years, this might be in the heart of redevelopment itself! Currently, it's easy to get to anything with a short drive, despite construction on highway 53.
