The owners/managers were very responsive to all our needs, and made us feel as if we were staying with family.

Not as modern as the national chains, but the conveniences made up for it. Among others (1) a mini-fridge in our room (2) driving the car right up to the door, making it easier to load and unload the car (3) 10 miles outside the city, so that it is more private, and I could let my children swim in the pool without standing over them.
