The hotel is old & outdated, provides a cheap over night stay if that's what you are looking for. Beds are horrible. Carpet had holes in it. I didn't expect a 5 star hotel for the price but a little updating & decent bed would be nice. I don't think anything new has been added to this hotel in a... More

Spent two nights at the Dunes Motel. It is old and outdated, but it provided what we needed-reasonable bed with clean sheets, fridge, wifi(which is a bit spotty) , and a reasonable bathroom. Is this luxury? Would you want to spend a lot of time in the room? No, but at $55 per night luxury is not expected. We spent... More

This place is a dive. Do not book this motel! Poorly cleaned, room doors do not work or lock properly. Refrigerator in room did not work and door did not seal. Holes and stains in carpet. Beds have horrible matresses. Had to kill a large Arachnid in the bathroom before my wife would enter.

The motel is clean and you get everything you would expect for the price. The owner seemed very pleasant and even allowed me to use the garden hose to wash my motorcycle. Met some other travelers for a few drinks on the porch and had a good time. The parking area is just dirt and grass but was no problem.... More

As others have stated this is like a trip back 50 years to when travelers simply wanted an inexpensive place to sleep and clean up. If you are a fan of retro travel you will like the Dunes' simple, clean, quiet, cheap rooms, which have a few miles on them. If you expect a lot of modern amenities and whine... More

If you are determined to stay in Grand Marais, and can't meet the Voyageur Inn minimum night requirement, you don't have many options. As others have stated, the owners are nice and helpful, the room rate is inexpensive, and the location is good for walking into town to the beach or restaurants/bars. However, I wish I had picked another town,... More

My husband and I stayed here when our backpacking trip through Pictured Rocks got cut short due to severe thunderstorms. We were happy with the low price ($55 for one queen), clean room, and close proximity to Lake Superior Brewing Company (5 minute walk). The owners were very nice and super friendly. The building is old, and the rooms are... More

We spent 11 days on vacation here. Of which 4 of the days we had 20 people with us that we rented 4 rooms for because of our sons 21 birthday party. I must say that the owners were great, if we needed anything it was taken care of. This was one of our family best vacation. we will be... More

Born and raised in Michigan I’ve been all over the state and now I tour on my motorcycle, then in 2008 I rediscovered Grand Marais, MI which I now call my second home and the best place on Earth! I like the Dunes because the owners are very friendly and it is walking distance to downtown. Now it is a... More

A fellow TA member suggested this motel in Grand Marais. We stayed one night, a Friday night. We arrived late, and everything was locked tight in the office. No light on. The sign was not on. I think we told them we'd be coming in late. But the owner saw our car headlights and came and unlocked the door. We... More
