My wife and I, with our baby girl, stayed at the Hotel Gunter for about week while visiting the area - we like the area so much that we are considering a home there. The Hotel Gunter is unique and genuine, completely charming, gracefully-aged and revived, comfortable, easy-going, relaxed. The staff is friendly, responsive, and helpful. The hotel itself is... I stayed at this wonderful place for the entire summer while I was working down in Cumberland on a temporary assignment. It was a beautiful experience and an answer to a prayer. While I was waiting for one of the hotel's apts to become available, I stayed alternately in room #s 307 and 308. Both are finely appointed with antique... More

I agree with all the positive reviews. The plumbing, wiring and fire sprinklers are all modern. I really appreciate that the old wood work was repaired and refinished. My room had 7” oak baseboard. The door was paneled oak with a transom window above.. If you want boring go to a bit chain hotel. If you want atmospheres this is... More

This was a most unusual place. I found the parking and entered in the lower level where there was a museum of sorts - strange exhibits of dolls and memorabilia and stuffed animals. This was a little creepy and then when I went upstairs the TV was blasting a religious show of Hail Marys. The lobby itself was interesting in... More

When it was built in 1896, this was the Hotel Gladstone, certainly the grandest accommodation in these parts. When you walk in the front door of the Hotel Gunter today, one can almost imagine the bellboys in brown uniforms with pearl buttons as they appeared in those halcyon days. The grand staircase before you looks every bit like a set... More

Ah, the Hotel Gunter -- or Falinger's, or however you refer to it, this was an experience! This hotel requires time to look around and enjoy all the furnishings and appointments. You travel up from the basement level and the back parking lots through the winding maze of a corridor to the front desk -- and be sure you do... More

This is not your average hotel and if you are very selective in your hotel choices, this is probably not for you. This is a very old hotel that was restored back in the 1980's by a local family. I was born in this town and traveled back for a visit. It is in the center of town so it... More

Stayed 2 nights at the Hotel Gunter, and it is a reminder of what a 100+ year old hotel was. That's because it is a 100+ year old hotel. We had a small room but quiet, save for the A/C unit. It's kind of a maze getting from the parking lot in rear to the lobby, but you go through... More

My wife and I spent a wonderful July 4th weekend at the hotel. Very eclectic, old (but very functional) furnishings throughout - its basement museum on coal mining and the old Frostburg jail is a must-see! We slept with the room windows open both nights of our stay - very quiet environment with views of Morantown valley. It seems as... More

Failinger's Hotel Gunter (FHG) is unlike anyplace I have ever stayed overnight. Overall, the stay was fine. The room was clean and spacious, and all technologies functioned properly. Anyone born after 1945 might not recognize the public spaces in the interior of the building as a hotel; it is more like a gigantic mansion. Several portions of the space are... More
