My sister and I decided to get out of Boston for a weekend in Portland. The Elms was a great choice. At first glance with the paper mill across the street, we wanted to turn around and go back to the old port. I'm glad that we decided to check out this great old mill house. We arrived at the... The Elms was the perfect site for a long holiday weekend in Portland with friends. We booked the entire B&B and it was wonderful to have a home base to hang out for lazy mornings and evening shenanigans. Much more comfortable than a hotel! Innkeeper Matt treated us to delicious and gigantic breakfasts every morning in the beautiful dining room,... More

Loved this B&B! My boyfriend and I stayed here for a friends birthday party and we had a fabulous time. The building has all sorts of interesting design and architecture, which was appealing to both of us. We stayed in the "Bear Den" room 3, which was a lot more spacious than the photo on the site would indicate. It... More

Sadly, it's the bad and the ugly that first comes to mind. No-one around to greet us upon arrival (3 o'clock) in the afternoon, just an envelope left on the hall table. We wandered around in this huge house and there was nothing to make us feel like valued guests. The place is in desperate need of love and attention... More

The Elms B&B website is completely misleading: the house is on a very busy street in an industrial suburb of Portland, Maine, home to Sappi Ltd.'s Westbrook Paper Mill and R&D Center, which happens to be directly across the street. The paper mill is huge, smelly, and noisy, and conveniently not mentioned in any of the descriptions of the B&B.... More

The Elms accommodated our last minute stay in Portland, and we felt that we lucked out. We were greeted by the friendly owner who offered snacks, restaurant recommendations, and a flashlight for a riverside stroll. The house was beautiful and clean. As mentioned, it's across from an active mill-more a factory than a charming New England mill. Riverside rooms are... More

We stayed here because it was less than 1 mile from a family members house. We didn't see any employees the afternoon we checked in. I was glad that the door code had been sent to me in my confirmation email. I had booked the Cottage room which has twin beds. That room faces the water, which makes for a... More

First impression is the large mill across the street. Never excepted that. Once I walked in that all disappeared. Large common areas, pool table butlers pantry, and hot tub on the porch. Our room was on the mill side of the building, with a shared bath, not what I prefer but felt like being in Europe. I understand that most... More

Dirty windows and significant dust on the window frames greeted me upon arriival which I probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't needed to put the windows down in order to block the noise from the paper mill across the street. The bed was comfortable but there were no extra pillows available. There are no bathrobes available for the possible... More

I know I can be a little picky. . .okay, my husband says very picky. This was, without a doubt, the BEST experience we have ever had at a B&B. Matt and Scott went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. It was more like visiting old friends. You can have as... More
