The Elms is an old victorian type of building with gothic features on the large side with plenty of old world charm .The proprietors had completely different attitudes towards there guests? One is very helpful and attentive , The other ignored us ! it made us very uncomfortable and not welcome Breakfast was good and made by the man that... More

After a New England road trip with a group of friends, the Elms was perfect for the last night. We arrived late and were able to let ourselves in with the code provided in the email. Our rooms were as pictured, we were on the third floor and had a "shared bathroom", which we didnt mind. That night we were... More

The Elms is a very impressive building, 8,000 square feet over 100 years old. Our rooms were comfortable, breakfast (waffles or eggs benedict) was lovely and Scott, Matt, and Mack Truck (the dog) were all engaging. Location was fine, an easy drive to the downtown restaurants. Our room on the second floor faced the street and the dreaded paper mill,... More

My sister and I decided to get out of Boston for a weekend in Portland. The Elms was a great choice. At first glance with the paper mill across the street, we wanted to turn around and go back to the old port. I'm glad that we decided to check out this great old mill house. We arrived at the... The Elms was the perfect site for a long holiday weekend in Portland with friends. We booked the entire B&B and it was wonderful to have a home base to hang out for lazy mornings and evening shenanigans. Much more comfortable than a hotel! Innkeeper Matt treated us to delicious and gigantic breakfasts every morning in the beautiful dining room,... More

Loved this B&B! My boyfriend and I stayed here for a friends birthday party and we had a fabulous time. The building has all sorts of interesting design and architecture, which was appealing to both of us. We stayed in the "Bear Den" room 3, which was a lot more spacious than the photo on the site would indicate. It... More

Sadly, it's the bad and the ugly that first comes to mind. No-one around to greet us upon arrival (3 o'clock) in the afternoon, just an envelope left on the hall table. We wandered around in this huge house and there was nothing to make us feel like valued guests. The place is in desperate need of love and attention... More

The Elms B&B website is completely misleading: the house is on a very busy street in an industrial suburb of Portland, Maine, home to Sappi Ltd.'s Westbrook Paper Mill and R&D Center, which happens to be directly across the street. The paper mill is huge, smelly, and noisy, and conveniently not mentioned in any of the descriptions of the B&B.... More

The Elms accommodated our last minute stay in Portland, and we felt that we lucked out. We were greeted by the friendly owner who offered snacks, restaurant recommendations, and a flashlight for a riverside stroll. The house was beautiful and clean. As mentioned, it's across from an active mill-more a factory than a charming New England mill. Riverside rooms are... More
