My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights and enjoyed everything about the place. It is charming but updated. The breakfasts were good and the staff (everyone) was friendly, accommodating and professional. We had a great time and the cupula in the attic was an added bonus. The location is about 2 blocks up from the waterfront and from... More

We stayed in the Longfellow room - loved the windows overlooking the rooftops toward the harbor. The sheets were soft and the bathroom was spacious. Breakfast was elegant and the waitress was delightful, but the inn itself is what made the stay memorable. It's a gorgeous old building with a great deal of character, and furnished with elegance and restraint.... More

The Danforth is in an elegant historical home, lovingly restored, with ornate fireplaces, decorative ceilings, and works of art, in a quiet part of town, a pleasant 15 to 20 minute walk to the Old Port or Arts District. At the top of the house, there is a cupola with a view of the harbor; it is easy to imagine... More

We stayed in the Longfellow square room in March of 2014, as well as the Eastern Promenade. We stayed for 4 days (3 nights) and then two additional nights because of a flight delay due to weather. We had breakfast four of the five mornings. All of the breakfast menus were thoughtfully crafted and delicious. Also, we are both vegetarians... More

Everything was above expectation. The room, the lovely people running it and the gourmet breakfast. The Layer bathroom goodies are out of this world. I even went online to discover where to get them. Only 3 stores in the US and no selling online - only to hotels. We will certainly recommend to our Brazilian travel fellows.

We arrived back in Portland after a long day of flying and were greeted with the softest sheets imaginable, the most comfortable bed, and sunrise over Portland Harbor upon our waking. Our room was beautiful, spacious, and the bathroom royal. The shower was super. From the Danforth we were able to walk anywhere in Portland, and did take a wonderful... More

We stayed at The Danforth over V-Day weekend and couldn't have asked for a lovelier experience. The room (Old Port) was spacious yet cozy and inviting, and very luxe. The food was delicious (still salivating over the homemade donut) and accommodated a gluten sensitivity just perfectly. Yes, sadly my GF honey did not get to enjoy that donut so I... More

The Danforth proved to be a perfect balance between wanting to "get away" and have interesting things to do. The rooms all seem inviting with enough privacy and difference to give that individual experience. Our room was filled with morning sun that brought a welcomed energy to the day. Portland has plenty of restaurants to choose and we enjoyed walking... More

We spent one night here as a result of a flight cancellation, but didn't regret it as The Danforth is a real treat. We enjoyed eating at Street & Co (a short drive) and the inn's original details and character made it a very attractive place to stay. We would happily stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting... More

I'm sure The Danforth is a terrific small hotel and I was very much looking forward to our night with them. We booked the Danforth on Jetsetter well in advance of our stay. On the weekend of our trip a strong snowstorm came through Maine and I made a safety decision to reschedule our plans for another weekend in January.... More

Cancellations impact us greatly and the cancellation of a Jetsetter stay is even more complicated. Our manager was following policy and we don't fault her. However, you should have been able to re-book considering your circumstances and the heavy snow conditions. We apologize and the CEO of Lark Hotels will be in contact with you directly about re-booking your stay.... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Danforth is the grande dame of the Portland, Maine boutique hotel scene. Built in the 1800's, extensive renovations to design and (mostly) new bathrooms have married historic gentility with classic but contemporary stylings. Basement billiard room, a widow's walk with views, three course breakfasts - who could ask for more? A recent review called The Danforth an historic mansion with a hip vibe. ... more   less
