If you like generic, identical Hilton hotels wherever you go, this is not for you. This place is quaint, antiquated, unique and probably several other words that contain the letter "q". It's a beautifully kept throwback to a simpler time. It's a rambling old house right on the beach on a beautiful island in Maine. There's a wrap-around porch and... More

We found this historic lodging to be a fun, unique and very affordable accommodation in the Portland area. Just a 15 minute ferry ride across the bay. It is being run and maintained by a small, dedicated group that appreciates the beauty and historical significance of the site. It is situated right on the ocean, walking distance from the ferry... We were visiting Peaks Island for the day and wanted to visit this historic building. Steve Kinney, a very impressive volunteer, happily related the fascinating history of the building, described and displayed some of the remarkable original documents that he is unearthing about the 8th Maine, and showed us the rooms, kitchen, and decks with views that would make one... The 8th Maine is an awesome place to stay if you're looking for a different travel experience. The rooms are big enough to be comfortable and cozy (not huge but not broom closets either), and the building is an awesome place to explore. Don't go in expecting 5-star big city hotel service, and you'll have a blast. A few things... More

The 8th Maine is a place like no other -- hard to describe to those who haven't been there. We call it "glorified camping out." Peaceful, beautiful location, old-fashioned, no pressure to "do everything", make your own fun, do your own thing (whatever that is), simple style. I've been going there since 1990. My husband visited there as a child... More

Great place to stay on Peaks Island. Spectacular views, on a cliff overlooking the ocean and islands of Casco Bay. Very rustic, with old original fixtures dating back to the Civil War. This is a family friendly walk back in time. Our turret room (#9) had incredible views, the sounds of crashing waves and fog horns lullaby you to sleep.... More

Love it at the 8th Maine. It sits right in the Ocean - you fall asleep listening to the waves breaking in the rocks below. There are great porches that look out on the Atlantic. It has cooking facillities, a great room with games and chairs circled about the fireplace. The rooms upstairs are roomy, and downstairs are smaller but... More

We spent a delightful three days at The 8th Maine on Peaks Island this summer. We had a room that looked out over the water where we listened to the waves bringing in the tide to the front lawn, watched the moon shimmer over a nearly 180 degree water view that looked out to...well, Landsend in England? We were transported... More

We stayed at the 8th Maine a few weekends ago. We were on Pesks for a family reunion. My husband and I stayed downstairs. Room was clean and bed comfortable. My sisters stayed upstairs. Rooms were a bit larger and bathroom was nicer. We would definitely stay here again.

We had a wonderful time on our vacation. We have been there many, many times before. The new management is very accommodating and relaxed.Love the outdoor shower, the view of the ocean from the back porch and the relaxed feeling you get. Just like, no, better than it used to be.
