I like roughing it and this place was right up my alley. Peaks Island is fun. My only complaint is there are way too many rules that degrade the quality of your stay. The caretaker would follow guests around to make sure everyone was following the rules. He even follows people into the bathrooms. He seemed to annoyed at having... More

Not that do any thing except complain about to many people staying and not following their so called rules which were make up when they wanted something there way!!Funny that everyone on the island we spoke to could not... The Eighth Maine Courtesies are the house rules that we post to remind folks how to live in harmony with others during their visit in the Memorial. The “rules” are there to protect the building, our guests and everyone's ability to enjoy their stay. Staying at the Eighth Maine is a communal experience, so it is important for everyone to... More

This would have been an amazing place to stay, but unfortunately it is run by some very strange people. When I arrived there was no one there to check us in, actually my niece showed me and my husband where our room was. Right then and there I thought that this was very strange. We then found ourselves having a... More

DON"T DO IT...a getaway for a famiy wedding started off nice with Dick Adams...we shared our food and drinkwith him and he told us numerous times we were the best guests in a long time...well eventually the caretaker and his wicked girlfriend arrived and things changed. They were rude, mean vicious and didnt ever try and welcome us... we had... More

Our Memorial Hall was built in the late 1880's as a summer season home where the veterans and their families could gather to enjoy their summer vacations along with their comrades in arms. The common areas of the building were left with exposed framing and and sheathing without any insulation or modern sound proofing. Later, some special areas were finished... More

The "caretaker" and his girlfriend are less then normal !! They were not very inviting people and clearly do not like" groups" of more then 2 people. Although the view was beautiful and the actual place had a old time charm unlike chain hotels, if your looking for a place to get away, socialize, spend some time with friends and... More

This is not the Ramada Inn. It's FAR better. If you have stayed in a cabin in a National Park, or in hostels, you will find that this is the closest comparison: a shared bathroom, and you bring your own food -- you get your own gas hob, fridge, and larder in a very large, very well-stocked kitchen and dining... Thanks for the great write-up. We appreciate that you enjoyed your stay and that you provided such an information packed review for others to digest before they decide to stay with us. Customer word of mouth and recommendations are the nectar of the gods. Advertising and marketing are fine, but real customers say it best in their own words. While... More

We were greeted by darkness and a note by a phone written in sharpie. We called for assistance & were escorted to the cellar and through a small cluttered galley to a dark hallway with paint chipping and to our room which was small enough to fit an iron hospital-like bed with old chipped paint furniture, an open window at... We are sorry that we were not able to meet your expectations on your visit to our facility on Peaks Island. Our facility is pretty unique. It is not for everyone. The Eighth is a trip. Time travel back to the time when Civil War vets gathered here to experience the comradery forged on the battlefield. Lulled to sleep waves crashing and the salt air, a sure cure for insomniacs. You get your own refrigerator, dining table, and gas stove. No need to go to expensive island restaurants.
