One of the most beautiful places I have seen in the Northeast. The place is just amazing. Very rustic and simple with pretty much no technology. It is like taking a step back in time. The owners is just the sweetest and the home cooked meals are to die for. Really friendly atmosphere and a great place to get away.

My wife, three teenage children, and I just spent three days at the most enchanting place in all of island New England, staying at the Trailing Yew in their house called the Mooring Chain, which was lit only with oil lanterns, and cooled only by ocean breezes. That the weather was perfect added to the experience. First, let's discuss the... More

I have been coming to Monhegan Island and staying at the Trailing Yew every year for the past 17 years....that pretty much says it all. I recommend Monhegan and the Trailing Yew to anyone who wants a peaceful, relaxing and rustic time. Great food too.

Yes, the rooms are rustic, yes you might not have power in your room, but on the other hand, you don't lock your room either, matter of fact, you're not even given a key, also, instead of lights, you get a kersosene lantern. We very much enjoyed the rustic feel and the camaraderie we felt with the other guests. The... More

This was my first trip to Monhegan Island, and I loved it. The Trailing Yew was part of the experience, most of which was fine, one part of which could definitely be improved. If you have ever vacationed on a small island, you know that it is a special experience. It is its own world. Everything is relaxed and after... More

Food was OK-the rest was poor. For the price: $ 250 for two, what you get in the room and bathroom (shared with many) is really youth hostel quality. Many rooms have no electricity- so no lights, no outlets. There were two oil lamps that had no wicks to light. If they were charging youth hostel rates ($25) maybe but... More

I stayed here for a week during the summer and has the most beautiful experience. Monhegan, in general is like walking back in time, and the Yew allows the full experience. There is limited electricity and basic accommodations but I found myself completely taken in to its charm. The land is filled with painters and regulars, and the sounds of... More

Our first stay on the island which we found interesting, great views, quiet and peaceful. The Trailing Yew however is a different story, although a lovely location. The over all feeling of the place is rundown, shabby, and uncared for. The staff was indifferent(we actually never saw anyone who looked like management until we checked out). I believe she was... this hotel is a bit out of the ordinary. It has a rustic feel, which I don't mind. And the location is lovely, Monhegan is a real gem. The staff is nice, the guests are all friendly. Relative to other places on Monhegan (there are only two other hotels) it is a bit less expensive. Breakfast and dinner are included.... More

I'm okay with rustic. Been to many rustic places. Love communal meals (and the food was good). But, in order to get me back to the Yew and, in fact, in order for it to survive, it is long past time to get rid of the old, moldy furniture, beds, linens, etc and bring this place up to acceptable standards....
