For some, 7 days is plenty. For most, 7 days is just the beginning, middle, or end of someone’s journey. People come here and don’t want to leave. If they do leave, they come back at some point during their travels. If you’re a gardener (or want to be gardener), this is place is paradise. There is SO much life... More

My stay at Fat Cat was probably not the norm for your average backpacker because I was studying at the University of Auckland at the time. However my experience here was invaluable and it truly is difficult to put words to the experience. Let's get the negatives out of the way: If you are looking for perfect cleanliness, your own... When booking this place I already had a good feeling about it. I had no idea how much better my experience would be. I expected a nice alternative hostel but what I found was a amazing backpackers community. Everybody is more then friendly and will try to help you and a lot of nice things are provided. It is a... Great really friendly, helpful, relaxed atmosphere, so easy to meet people, staff are actually travellers who stay for longer, so they know how to create a home. Very clean, organised (old, everything is recycled, but better like that). It's a small organic farm - great gardens for relaxing and chickens for fresh eggs!! Fire bath amazing!! I felt really really... More

we stayed there twice for a week each time and liked it very much. probably the only backpacker where you end up, if you wish, knowing most people there. owners and staff very friendly and helpful, but dont see this as a hostel. it s an open minded community of people who like a different approach to life and a... It certainly was not for us! A lot of the people there seemed to love it! I found it dirty&dusty (brought on BOTH of our allergies pretty strongly). The kitchen is TINY and making food is such an ordeal due to this. When we arrived we were told they had given our room to people who had arrived without a... More

We eventually arrived in the middle of nowhere and found a dump. We had booked a private twin room but this was actually a double bed in a freezing, damp and filthy caravan. Not what we booked! I can't be completely sure but I'm 90% certain I overheard them saying the people who had been in a caravan didn't like... More

Booked this for a few nights as the hostel booking website hinted the place was quirky and offered a hostel in a rural setting, which it was. But by no means is this place a hostel. It is a shack full of hippies, though they were friendly on arrival and offered tea. We booked a double room on a hostel... More

The Fat Cat is more then just a hostel, it´s a home with big community feeling. They have airport pick up service wich was awesome, It´s close to the beautiful nature park and famous Piha beach. You can join the vegan/vegetarian meals for just $3-6. At night everyone gatters around the fire to sing, play guitar and drink a beer.... More

A beautiful international community combined with an organica ambience make for a stay you will not forget. If you are in Auckland and unsure of where to stay, go out of your way to stay here, you will not regret it.
