The Library Suite was awesome; luxury digs at a price I would normally pay at a hotel. David and Michelle were most gracious. I will judge all other Bed & Breakfasts by the Richards House. The history of the home was fascinating; Dave gave us a very interesting tour! The outside is a story of its own, and the moment... More

We really enjoyed our stay. We received a very nice tour when we arrived and did notice that there was the smell of cat urine. It was NOT overwhelming as some have suggested. We met the feline friends and it was very obvious that the cats were NOT allowed in the rooms. It was emphasized many times by Dave. The... More

This is our second trip here. On Saturday evening we realized that some pillows and towels had cat urine on them. Why? We picked through and found ones that didn't smell so strong. Not all were strong with odor, but the pullout bed pillow was clearly use by a cat with the hair/cat urine to show for it along with... More

The guests' account isn't even plausible. When they checked in they didn't notice any odors. When showed their room (free upgrade to much nicer room) they didn't notice any odors. Didn't notice any odors in the closet in their room (where the portable bed and bedding is stored.) Brought in their bags, went to dinner and came back and their... More

This year we chose Dubuque as our location for our family vacation. After researching interesting locations I chose the Richards House. It was wonderful. Each piece of woodwork and stained glass were carefully placed when this house was built to represent the owner's personality. The towering high ceilings and the character of the rooms spoke volumes of the rich history.... More

Richards House B&B was simply amazing! The exterior is under major renovations, but that interior is absolutely breathtaking! The work they are doing on this house to bring it back to its former glory when first built truly is a labor of love and you can tell by their enthusiasm. I was looking at other reviews and noticed that people... More

The Richards House is difficult to rate fairly. Yes, the exterior is in very poor condition, but we both felt safe using the front steps. The neighborhood? We are in our 60s and walked everywhere even after dark. It's Dubuque, for heavens sake!...a small river city that the economy has not been kind to but is working hard to pull... More

Full Disclosure: We did not actually stay overnight here (though we had a reservation and showed up - the dilapidated condition of the neighborhood and the serious exterior issues (way more than "needing some TLC"), combined with an overwhelming stench of cat urine (triggering my wife's allergies, big-time) upon opening the front door caused us to cancel and seek alternate... My wife and I stayed at the Richards House in Dubuque last week and we were amazed and awed by the majestic interior of the house. It is filled with original fixtures and furnishings from the house's original owners. It is an inspiring collection of hand-carved and stained glass wonders and we were mesmerized just looking around our room. We... More

This house has a beautiful interior with elaborate woodwork, fancy hearths, and brilliant stained glass and chandeliers. A true show piece. The breakfast was delicious and expansive so much so that we were able to skip lunch completely. BUT..... The exterior is ramshackle with the front porch especially in need of work. If you are not a cat person I... More
