I've stayed at Hotel Fort Des Moines a dozen times on the past 8 years. Parking was super busy, rooms had antique furniture and it has boasted one of the best dance party ballrooms on the planet. Now in 2015 it looks like a lot of framework and facework are needed. It is a gorgeous old building that you don't... More

Dated hotel booked over the phone. Poor choice if you like well kept properties. Sad to see a historic building with potential in this shape. Had to have housekeeping come up during the day to clean sewage and fungus from under the toilet. Dated furniture that is banged up. On the upside there is a nice French restaurant and a... More

How sad that such a fine old building in such a prime location has been handled so poorly. Having eaten in the beautifully preserved and restored Django, it ssemed natural to want to stay ay Hotel Fort Des Moines. Wrong. Even in the lobby you can tell that this place is run on the cheap, with only the spiral staircase... More

Marriott Renaissance properties could do something with this place...potential is here. If it wasn't so cold, I think I'd pull the tent and sleeping bag out of the car and camp out tonight. Run down, dated, crappy internet connection and unfriendly staff. Exactly the combo that either leads to a reality show, or a future demolition. Django Restaurant was great... More

This place is on the national register of historic places. Skip it. It is old and run down. The lobby is beautiful but as soon as you leave the main floor, think Bates motel. The rooms are old, worn out carpeting, chipped paint, peeling wallpaper, chipped furniture, a bed that sinks in the middle, a bathroom tub that is cracked,... More

I stayed here for business due to location and corporate rate. Was very disappointed in the property. Carpeting throughout needed to be replaced/cleaned. I was very uncomfortable with the condition of the room and I'm pretty sure the curtains and bedding have been there since the early 60's, not just a replica to look vintage but actual vintage. The bathroom... More

This hotel is old and outdated. The heater in the room made serious noise and was dripping steam that was making a hole in the carpet. I was worried it would start a fire. Staff was unprofessional and not very knowledgeable or helpful. I gave two because the rooms are spacious and the location is good.

First the problems: the internet is so weak from the room, that one has to hit the lobby to use a laptop. Secondly, I put on a do not disturb sign AND asked the front desk to alert housekeeping that they could skip my room, AND told the housekeeper in person, and she still knocked on my door one afternoon... I enjoyed the historic charm of this centrally located hotel. The shuttle was convenient, staff was pleasant. The old style tv in the room instantly dates it. The bathroom shower was very long and narrow. We opened the closet door and found two mismatched dirty socks. We orded room service for breakfast. The breakfast was great. Large portions and brought... More

This hotel looks and feels very outdated compared to a lot of hotels, but this one is also about 100 years old. It worked out very well for our stay which is what mattered most. My only complaint was we took a stairwell to get downstairs and nothing was marked so we ended up in the back of a restaurant... More
