The lobby gives one the feeling of a historic, renovated hotel. Polished brass, wooden paneling, music playing. However, the rooms are a different story. Our room huge, but very dated. The "snack bar" was obviously taken from a different location and put into our room. The dirty refrigerator didn't stay closed and the bar itself was pretty beat up. The... more

This was my second visit to the hotel. I was very satisified with all aspects of the stay. We had a good room rate for a two room suite with large refrigerator, microwave, 2 TV's and a sofa sleeper. Check-in was fast and efficient. The staff happily drove me to the downtown Farmers Market when I requested. Good dining options... more

Very creepy, run down place. Reminds me of hotels in the movies where people go to hang themselves so their family won't find them. The lobby is grand and the rooms were probably nice once -- like 40 years ago. They're clean -- that's all I can say about them -- but stale. The beds are 6" thick -- you... more

I chaperoned a group of 6 teenage girls for a long weekend in Des Moines. The hotel was booked fairly last minute, but the staff was very helpful in making sure that I had my own room, on the same floor as my students. The staff was very polite in helping us to our rooms, and very considerate when contacting... more

I stayed at this hotel while in town for the Des Moines Marathon. I found this to be a convenient location, although I did have to walk a few blocks to get to the marathon expo and start/finish line area. It was easy to get to and from from the airport via car. However, as I didn't see anything on... more

We stayed here for the Iowa Cubs package which was great. The shuttle was very convenient. We all woke up with sore backs, though, and we even paid extra for a suite. The beds are getting kind of old. Also, there were no snack machines in the building anywhere but the clerk opened up the gift shop so I could... more

What a dump! Stinky, rundown, and rude staff. Bathtub didn't work and rooms and hallway are filthy. After reading other traveler's reviews, we were shocked by what we found. It is on the outskirts of Downtown Des Moines, not near anything. Our presidintial candidates deserve a nicer place to stay.We were booked for 4 nights, and checked out after first night.... more

We stayed here during the 80/35 music festival July 4-5 in a suite. This hotel was perfect for us. The festival was 3 blocks away and we were within walking distance of many bars and restaurants. It is also connected to the downtown sky-walk. They had a neat British looking taxi to take you with 5 miles of the hotel.... more

a friend and i were in des moines for the weekend and we had somehow forgotten to reserve a room! we found a room at the hotel fort des moines, and it was a pretty good experience. the room was small, it had 1 double bed,but that was certainly not the hotel's fault, it was our own for forgetting and... more

Hotel Fort Des Moines is a charming, older hotel connected to all the dowtown buidlings by a skywalk. We were there over the weekend and had an excellent experience. The hotel has a tremendous amount of history including visits by all the political candidates during the Iowa caucus. We would recommend this hotel to everyone. There is also good dining... more
