This historic hotel is set to close down from restorations in March of 2010. The hotel was purchased by Hilton. This hotel is not the same old cookie cutter hotel chain, but rather offers a nice option for those looking to stay in a historic setting. The hotel is connected to all of downtown Des Moines by the Skyway, so... more

Hotel staff were slow to respond to a persistent high-pitched noise coming from the walls, the pipes or the heating ducts. After three hours of calling the desk, they finally agreed to move us to a new room (around midnight). The noise outside this room came from the central heat/air unit. We got about fours hours of sleep that night.... more

In July I stayed at the Hotel Ft. Des Moines for a getaway. I really like the beautiful old lobby and decor throughout. The beds are very comfortable and parking is convenient and free on the weekends. I prefer to stay at HFD over Marriott, actually. The Marriott is busier and has more family activity, so can be noisy. The... more

This once- lovely hotel is allegedly set to close for remodeling in November 2009. It is sadly neglected and apparently the plan is to forgo any upkeep or maintenance until the hotel closes its doors. Rooms are unbelievably shabby and worn (gross polyester counterpane on the bed, greasy carpet, dirty closet), walls are paper thin, and the bathrooms are grubby... more

This is an average hotel with fair to good service. The rooms are a bit shabby. more

The lobby gives one the feeling of a historic, renovated hotel. Polished brass, wooden paneling, music playing. However, the rooms are a different story. Our room huge, but very dated. The "snack bar" was obviously taken from a different location and put into our room. The dirty refrigerator didn't stay closed and the bar itself was pretty beat up. The... more

This was my second visit to the hotel. I was very satisified with all aspects of the stay. We had a good room rate for a two room suite with large refrigerator, microwave, 2 TV's and a sofa sleeper. Check-in was fast and efficient. The staff happily drove me to the downtown Farmers Market when I requested. Good dining options... more

Very creepy, run down place. Reminds me of hotels in the movies where people go to hang themselves so their family won't find them. The lobby is grand and the rooms were probably nice once -- like 40 years ago. They're clean -- that's all I can say about them -- but stale. The beds are 6" thick -- you... more

I chaperoned a group of 6 teenage girls for a long weekend in Des Moines. The hotel was booked fairly last minute, but the staff was very helpful in making sure that I had my own room, on the same floor as my students. The staff was very polite in helping us to our rooms, and very considerate when contacting... more

I stayed at this hotel while in town for the Des Moines Marathon. I found this to be a convenient location, although I did have to walk a few blocks to get to the marathon expo and start/finish line area. It was easy to get to and from from the airport via car. However, as I didn't see anything on... more
