Beautiful Classic Hotel with great architectural touches you seldom see anymore. Great rate of $50/night! Very sad that the hotel seems to be in danger of not making it to it's 100th Anniversary in 2019 without upgrades and being part of a national chain. I hear it has been purchased and will be renovated - great news!!!! Meeting room floor... More

The best thing about this hotel was the lobby. There was not any heat in the rooms since the boiler had been cut off due to Spring. The night time low was 55 while we were there, and the room temp. in the morning matched. While I understand the nostalgia, there is a difference between nostalgia and neglect. There were... More

Rooms are very dated and not clean!! I have stayed at motels that are nicer. My first room they gave me was not cleaned. So he upgraded me to a suite. Well, between the mold/dust on top of shower area or all the pealing paint. It's just not a nice place. Looks cool from outside, nice location downtown, but a... More

The Fort has been a Des Moines Hotel anchor for years. Its old, but pretty well maintained. The rooms are pretty large, or at least the rooms I have stayed in were large. The "plumbing" could use an upgrade. The location is nice, food and beverage are available. Parking is a pain, but at least there is access to a... More

I've stayed at Hotel Fort Des Moines a dozen times on the past 8 years. Parking was super busy, rooms had antique furniture and it has boasted one of the best dance party ballrooms on the planet. Now in 2015 it looks like a lot of framework and facework are needed. It is a gorgeous old building that you don't... More

Dated hotel booked over the phone. Poor choice if you like well kept properties. Sad to see a historic building with potential in this shape. Had to have housekeeping come up during the day to clean sewage and fungus from under the toilet. Dated furniture that is banged up. On the upside there is a nice French restaurant and a... More

How sad that such a fine old building in such a prime location has been handled so poorly. Having eaten in the beautifully preserved and restored Django, it ssemed natural to want to stay ay Hotel Fort Des Moines. Wrong. Even in the lobby you can tell that this place is run on the cheap, with only the spiral staircase... More

Marriott Renaissance properties could do something with this place...potential is here. If it wasn't so cold, I think I'd pull the tent and sleeping bag out of the car and camp out tonight. Run down, dated, crappy internet connection and unfriendly staff. Exactly the combo that either leads to a reality show, or a future demolition. Django Restaurant was great... More

This place is on the national register of historic places. Skip it. It is old and run down. The lobby is beautiful but as soon as you leave the main floor, think Bates motel. The rooms are old, worn out carpeting, chipped paint, peeling wallpaper, chipped furniture, a bed that sinks in the middle, a bathroom tub that is cracked,... More

I stayed here for business due to location and corporate rate. Was very disappointed in the property. Carpeting throughout needed to be replaced/cleaned. I was very uncomfortable with the condition of the room and I'm pretty sure the curtains and bedding have been there since the early 60's, not just a replica to look vintage but actual vintage. The bathroom... More
