My girlfriend booked this place without looking too much into it. Knew it was "historic" so my expectations were tempered as such. Great location, decent service. That's the only glimmer of hope you will find here. The furniture and amenities in the rooms are horrible. After taking a shower, I look down and see a HUGE COCKROACH in the corner.... More

This hundred year old hotel was apparently Iowa's finest for many years and has lots of history and charm. Anything this old could use more remodeling but it is still very nice. It is about half (or less) the cost of one of the big new convention hotels which are about 3 blocks away, and is connected to the downtown... More

Very disappointing .....door wouldn't lock when you had to be somewhere. Had troubles continually. Hearter made loud popping noises all night couldn't sleep called front desk told us to pack up and move to 710 which they had saved as a back up for us but move at 4:am?? Bed spreads had stains on them and lights didn't work between... More

What contradictions! Great staff - had marvelous service - but all the courtesy and friendliness in the world doesn't make up for a room that should not be rented again without renovations. This hotel has such incredible potential. Fabulous location, great public meeting spaces, warm and friendly staff, but those facilities and people can't make up for the dingy carpeting... More

First, I am a HUGE fan of historic properties, and was very excited to stay here when told that was where I 'had' to stay during a business engagement. The fact that a large local employer endorsed and used the hotel mitigated all of the negative reviews here and elsewhere. Surely, I thought, they wouldn't put people up in a... More

The Hotel Fort des Moines made me feel like a "King" for the 3 days and two nights as their guest in October 2013. I believe this property offers a little more comfort than many of the previous reviews may suggest. However, to coin a phrase "it's no Holiday Inn", is the whole point of this uniquely designed property. First... More

Had the unfortunate opportunity to stay at this hotel last February and May for state wrestling and then track. My husband got a horrible rash on his body and face the first visit. Then in May we had a cockroach in our room larger then my thumb. We were refunded the cost of the room, but prefer not to have... More

The hotel itself is a neat old building. The lobby is very nice. But like others have said, once you get off the elevator, it is totally different. The room we had, was old and dirty. Not that they didn't clean it, but it is just so old that it's like permanent-dirty. The bathroom was obviously added on later, and... More

Like others have said, I really wanted to like this older boutique hotel in downtown Des Moines, but I just couldn't. I'm not a picky traveler (I've stayed in "cheap" guesthouses in Burma), but this hotel did not meet my expectations. We booked the Hotel Fort because it was cheaper than the Marriott, was in a good location for walking... More

I was committed to staying in downtown Des Moines prior to a morning race. Biggest issue was the noise! I could hear everything said and done in the bathroom next door while laying in bed...just not acceptable. Had 2 room suite with kitchenette, which was very nice for an older hotel.
