I called to book rooms and I needed a handicapped room my husband is paraplegic they said they had one with only 1 bed and they told me there was a bath seat. I had to book 2 more rooms for the rest of my family since there was only one bed in our room.i also asked if I could... More

We visited this hotel to attend an event in Downtown Des Moines. The Hotel is historic and quaint with a great location. They go out of their way to provide a shuttle to spots in downtown and surrounding areas. Actually they have an old London Taxi for dropping the purpose. We took advantage of it. The room was clean and... More

Spent a Saturday night at the Fort while in town for a wedding. This hotel is old and somewhat elegant with spacious rooms with character. All good so far, until we went to bed. The king size bed was a lot like two in a hammock; both of us rolled to the middle. We tried to claw our way back... More

I simply can not understand anyone giving this place a favorable rating. It's extremely dated, worn out, dirty, musty and is seriously just a few notches up from a flophouse. I only wish I was joking as I'm writing this at 1 AM after a terrible travel day (storms everywhere) and this place is now actually the worst part of... More

Stayed her June 9, 2014 to attend the Cher concert at Wells Fargo. The most impressive thing was the staff. Everyone on duty was friendly, knowledgeable, professional and humerous. They provided transport to the arena in plenty of time for the show which was an unexpected perk! Nearby restaurants are very good. We chose to eat at Raccoon Brewing, but... More

While traveling abroad, we enjoy staying in lodging which has personality. With its period woodwook, funky elevators, and turn of the century architecture, this fit the bill for us. If you are looking for a sleek new hotel, don't stay here. If you like a unique piece of the past, I would suggest staying here.

After making reservations for this weekend at the Hotel Fort Des Moines, I THEN looked at TripAdvisor and got scared by some of the reviews. Thankfully, it wasn't nearly as bad as some of the reviews made it out to be. YES it's an old hotel and it comes with some old hotel problems. My biggest beef was that the... More

I was in Des Moines a single night for a job interview across the street from the Fort des Moines. From the outside the hotel looks like it's going to be something really special inside, it's not. There is nothing architecturally appealing about the lobby and the decor is straight from the 1950's. The condition of the public spaces indicates... More

Stayed for two nights at this vintage hotel. Very clean. Room size was a little larger than expected for a hotel built in 1919. There are a lot of choices for hotels/motels in downtown area. I have always like the vintage hotels like the Drake or Plamer House in Chicago. Hotel Fort Des Moines is not comparable but it is... More

Absolutely beautiful hotel.. sometime in the long distant past. Currently out dated and smelly. Nice front desk area and the staff I talked with was friendly. To bad the rooms where tiny and stinky. My room was lucky enough to have a moldy ceiling in the bathroom and a shower that leaked all over the floor. Oh and they charge... More
