It isn't cheap and is reminiscent of the 1950's. The room was beautiful in a very traditional manner. The service is of a very high level but the regime is rigid and you eat from the excellent, traditional and limited menu, when summoned by the gong. Probably best tried as a one nighter before making any extended commitment. We found... More

been using this place for 30plus years and never ever been anything but delighted. The evening meals are first class and how nice to go well dressed without feeling out of place.the fact that all year round regulars like ourselves keep going back for decades must speak volumes for the place

Amazing time with friends. Loved the formality yet homely feel of the hotel. You are called to Breakfast and Dinner with a gong and the wait is worthwhile as the food is amazing. After walking the fells all day treating yourself to cream tea on the lawn is a must. This is a precious gem of a hotel.

The staff were the saving grace of this hotel. All of them were welcoming, pleasant and helpful and this enabled me to forget the inconveniences of no locks, no en suite facilities and no kettle. I'm normally a fan of restricted choice at mealtimes because it usually means an improvement in the quality of the cuisine; sadly I don't rate... More

My partner treated us both to a weekend away for my recent birthday. In addition, it was the first time we had taken our Jack Russell on holiday with us. It was fabulous from start to finish. The room was beautifully decorated and clean (real oldy-worldy with mod cons), the bath was huge, the hand-held shower excellent, and the view... More

This is the most extraordinary hotel I have ever visited. To reach it you need to take your heart in your hand as you follow the narrow lane that leads there with the occassional passing place until you find this quite delightful old building sheltering in the lee of the surounding mountains. Every wall is covered with prints, oil-paintings and... More

The moment we walked in the door we knew we had come to the right place! The ambience, furnishings, antiques are all charming. Our en-suite room was perfect with a view of the Lake. It was more like staying with friends than a hotel - delicious home-cooked food, fabulous cream tea, Especially impressed with morning tea brought to the room;... More

a quality lunch served with old fashioned English style and good value for money. Lunch is served at 1p.m. and is announced by a gong. 3 courses served by a waitress dressed in black and white and with a welcoming and pleasant personality. The food was all home cooked and was of excellent quality. The hotel is in lovely surroundings... More

We stayed at the Howtown Hotel on Saturday and Sunday of the August Bank Holiday. The Howtown Hotel is like an ageing much-loved but eccentric Aunt: it has personality in spades, but marches very much to a tune of its own. For this reason it is beyond comparison with most modern hotels, and it is not for everyone. The hotel... More

Had lunch here for my partners birthday. Took the Ullswater steamer so got a boat ride on lake too. The hotel is short walk from jetty. Lunch is served at 1.00 and announced by the gong. This place belongs to an earlier generation and is wonderful for that. Lunch is a soup starter followed by a salad and you are... More
