Beautiful remote location yet so easy to get to. This hotel is an old fashioned, olde world dream. Very friendly service, excellent food and plenty of choice even though there aren't any written menus. Tea on the lawn was very relaxing. Great spot for the start and finish of real walking country. Will definitely go again.

The hotel is at the end of a very narrow road down the east side of Ullswater, with only a couple of other houses nearby. Those without cars it can be reached by ferry as the regular ferry stops at the jetty about 300 yards away. There is no mobile phone reception in the hotel, but there is at the... More

A uniquely wonderful, warm & welcoming hotel; beautifully furnished, comfortable rooms, delicious meals and good wine list & bar...always fully lives up to my expectations & the Baldry family's high standards. Go with the flow, there are no menus but always a good choice of several main courses, fantastic puddings & cheeses. For old-style courtesy and comfort, surrounded by wonderful... More

We went for lunch as a family group of five. We were given a very traditional welcome in this very traditional hotel - packed with antiques and curios that provided plenty of conversation over drinks round a log fire. Lunch was served quite formally - soup, cold main course, dessert and coffee at a very reasonable price. And very good... More

The Lake District conjures up images of walks, lakes, cream teas, vitality and hospitality The hotel reviews here are great. Visitors wishing to use the bar, you have the monopoly on a place to eat before using the ferry. Even garden tables at rear would be a start

We have just returned from a weekend at The Howtown Hotel and had the most fantasic time. The hotel is like stepping back in time, no Wifi no mobile phone signal, just so peaceful and relaxing all set in the most stunning scenary. This is NOT a chain hotel by far, it is family run and run the same way... More

If you enjoy home cooking at it's very best in a fantastic ambiance with silver service that you would expect to find in top London restaurants. You should always try to book well in advance as weekends are always popular. My recommendation is the roast duck. The taste of the crisp skin is amazing. I will certainly re visit over... More

We visited the Hotel as a party of six recently for dinner just to experience what makes this small Lake District Hotel so popular. It soon became apparent that this is no ordinary corporate style hotel but a unique country house that has been run by Mrs Baldry assisted by her son, in the same style for over 50 years.... More

This was a return visit to the Howtown Hotel, our previous one being 24 years earlier. We thought we'd grab a bowl of soup before setting off on our walk to Glenridding. We went into the small deadly-quiet public bar at the back of the hotel, which already contained some folk who, like us, had alighted the mid-morning ferry at... More
