Stopped here for a drink mid-walk, so only used the public bar at the rear of the hotel. On entering the tiny room, it felt like time had stood still. Such a room - filled with character. Lovely, friendly service and two pints of local ale. I admire the un-messed aboutness of this place. I now want to go back... More

I have visited Howtown many times for afternoon tea, Sunday lunch or a drink at the end of a walk and always been impressed I but have just stayed there for the first time. What absolute bliss! Beautifully decorated but comfortable bedrooms with wonderful proper baths perfect for long soaks. Delightful little sitting rooms with real fires to fall asleep... More

I too called into the quaint Public Bar, for a cup of tea and were pleasantly surprised by the leaf tea served. It was delicious, china cups and proper tea set made it all the more worthwhile. Staff were pleasant and we would definitely call in again

Popped in to the (very tiny) public bar here whilst passing through. Was a very quirky establishment that seems to have frozen in time for many many years. To be fair the tea I had was real leaf tea served in proper tea cups which was nice. Not sure if I liked it or not. Maybe staying here is better.... More

I reviewed this hotel - which has many charms - in August when I stayed with my partner for two nights. We decided to return on their final weekend of the season to sample Sunday Lunch. Time was when Sunday lunch at the Howtown Hotel was posh enough to brag about. Alas, there is nothing much to brag about now.... More

This hotel is an absolute gem! If you want to relax in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, away from the pressures of modern life, then this is the hotel for you. The top-quality, home-cooked food is superb and the quality of service is second to none. Fabulous! All this and stunning views of Ullswater too. Perfect.

The hotel is run along the lines of a country house in the 1930's. Great atmosphere with the house stuffed with antiques. There are three sitting rooms on the ground floor, one with a TV and another on the first floor. There are always interesting guests to talk to, some of whom have been coming here for 20 or 30... It isn't cheap and is reminiscent of the 1950's. The room was beautiful in a very traditional manner. The service is of a very high level but the regime is rigid and you eat from the excellent, traditional and limited menu, when summoned by the gong. Probably best tried as a one nighter before making any extended commitment. We found... More

been using this place for 30plus years and never ever been anything but delighted. The evening meals are first class and how nice to go well dressed without feeling out of place.the fact that all year round regulars like ourselves keep going back for decades must speak volumes for the place

Amazing time with friends. Loved the formality yet homely feel of the hotel. You are called to Breakfast and Dinner with a gong and the wait is worthwhile as the food is amazing. After walking the fells all day treating yourself to cream tea on the lawn is a must. This is a precious gem of a hotel.
