Stayed along with my father and 2 dogs in one of the cottages. Exquisite location and a lovely building, with old fashioned service, but in a good way. food was delicious and, unusually for modern times served in one sitting. But I would advise you to get your drinks in the bar before dinner and take them through as the... More

Called there after arriving on steamer from Glenridding. Greeted by an extremely rude owner of the Howtown hotel. Obviously didn't want our custom! Words fail me! His is the only place to purchase refreshments when you disembark at Howtown. My advise do The! Stay on steamer and go to pooley bridge where there are several eateries and shops.

A step back in time! Wonderful experience and looking forward to returning again very soon. Super hospitality, wonderful traditional menu cooked perfectly. I appreciated all the little quirks, such as a gong call for dinner, but recognise they might not be to everyone's liking. No mobile phone signal or Internet access was worth the slighty higher room charge than we... More

we booked for 15 people after out monthly walk we had to be back at a certain time for the convienence of the hotel. we were directed to a sitting room which was a bit squashed for us all and the waiters brought in our tea/coffee and scones/jam and cream. one of our party had to go for extra chairs... To use words to describe our stay at Howton is never going to signify the magnificence of the holiday we enjoyed. We had the very best holiday [taking everything that includes into account], we have ever had. Why? Because of - the owner [David B], the staff [special thanks to Amy, Sarah and Ed], the location, the landscape, the lake,... More

This is a little gem of a hotel hidden away in gorgeous Ullswater countryside. If you are looking for a complete break from hectic modern life, this is the place for you. This is not your ordinary hotel. Forget wifi and TVs in the room, and instead enjoy sitting in one of the lounges or the bar for a drink... More

This is simply a stunning, quiet, old-fashioned hotel with a walkers' bar accessed from the small beer garden at the rear. If you've done Hallin Fell or circumnavigated it, this is a great place for a drink afterwards. However, don't tell anyone else... We don't want it spoiling!

Pompous and extremely rude owner. Not an inviting establishment for families. Were looked down upon as soon as we arrived and very rudely scolded as we left. We were intending to make use of the facilities but were spoken to in such a manner that we did not want to part with any money for the sake of this man.... More

We found this hotel by chance and were charmed by it. We felt we were in a time warp and expected characters from Agatha Christie to stroll across the grass towards us. The counterbalance to this were the young, modern members of staff who were very friendly and efficient. Our sandwich lunch was tasty and our drinks beautifully cold, very... More

The Hotel is an absolute time warp, classic elegance, and run like clockwork. I hope the place continues as it is one of Englands gems. The lunch is delicous with lots to chose from. Best way to arrive is the steamer only a short walk. Please do not change a thing! We return whenever we can!
