We ended our Sicily experience by flying back from Catania and we needed an interesting small hotel nearby. This is about 30km from Catania and is a perfect location. We had a suite - children downstairs in three single beds plus en-suite shower/lavatory, us upstairs in a very comfortable double bed with en-suite shower/lavatory. Not huge rooms but sufficient in... More

A beautiful hotel and rooms, great service in the hotel and restaurant and very friendly staff. Nothing much in the immediate area around the hotel, but a great base to explore by car. We had a very pleasant, peaceful stay and would go back there.

Lovely boutique hotel with friendly & professional staff, Sicilian fusion food & great pool area - all in a charming setting located in the nearby villages of Catania. The hotel has its own production of wine, olive oil and a variety of fruits and vegetables (fresh orange juice every morning for breakfast!) Rooms are spacious with either sea view or... More

We stayed here for 4 days in a hot June 2014 and thought that the hotel had some stylish antiques in the common areas, which were well air conditioned but in the bedroom we struggled to get cool even at night. The bedroom in room 16 was a bit of a cell, with white walls, just about room for the... More

Whilst I can understand a few reviews talking about the location, as long as you have a hire car this is no problem. The hotel is perfect and very unique being in a giant nursery. The dinner was excellent, breakfast first rate and very caring and attentive staff (which is useful with a toddler!). Can't fault it and would love... More

I visited Donna Carmela in August 2013 with my family. We were greeted by a very friendly receptionist and we were escorted to our lovely rooms. The staff were all very friendly, all except the maître'd who was surly and rude to the foreigners. Despite this, we were looked after very well by the staff and they recommended to us... More

Our 2nd visit to Donna Carmela was as enjoyable as our 1st. Everywhere immaculate, beautiful rooms with fabulous views and vases and pots of fresh flowers everywhere. I can't speak too highly of the staff - everyone - reception, restaurant and ground staff - were all exceptionally helpful and friendly. A beautiful hotel made superb by it's staff.

Donna Carmela is a very stylish hotel, set within the land owned by a family who not only run this hotel, but whose main business is plants. As such, you have the most amazing views from rooms such as ours (15 and 16) over the acres and acres of nursery, containing olives, palms etc, to the sea. On the other... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A home in the parkPlaced in the heart of a nursery specialised in Mediterranean plants, Donnacarmela is ready to welcome you in a 19th century Sicilian house that has been refurbished in full respect of the original but given all the modern comforts. Elegantly refined, the building dominates the ten thousand square metre nursery garden. Here you may enjoy a guided tour to discover the hundreds of scents and varieties of Mediterranean plants. It is also possible to admire a private collection of subtropical plants. The courtyards in lavic paving, the ancient cistern and river pebbles, the well-stocked wine cellar and the swimming surrounded by secular olive trees, the comfortable spaces designed to relax and the quiet reading room, the wide halls and ample dining room: all this has been designed to make your stay exceptional. Ten hectares in the most prestigious wine area on mount Etna are where we produce the Doc wine for Donnacarmela. The vineyards were bought by Donnacarmela in 2006 and they are between Solicchiata and Passopisciaro on the northern side of the volcano in the territory of Castiglione di Sicilia. The vineyards all grow Nerello Mascalese, the vine that produces the most appreciated wines in this area. This is where the ‘Montedolce Etna Doc’ is born from the passion and commitment of the Faro family in an area that has wine for its vocation. The name of the wine comes from the place where we produce it. The wine-making is done in a well-equipped cellar in Mascali, the area of origin of the Nerello Mascalese, only a few kilometres away from Donnacarmela.Montedolce is characterised by its ruby-red colour, red berry scents with mineral notes, and by the complexity, persistence and elegant tannin it offers the palate. We do not only offer wine and taste, however. A little lower down the mountain side, between the Ionic coast and the first hills, it is possible to find the Mediterranean plants that have found the best environment to grow here. Thus, they develop into unrepeatable shapes and colours: the Abutilon, the Agave, the Ficus, the Cistus, the Opuntiae, the ornamental Citrus plants are all to be found in the gardens of Donnacarmela. They are the essence of Mediterranean gardens. Tese plants and flowers offer themselves to visitors in all their charm. ... more   less
