Beyond all our expectations. This place is amazing. Darren, Nina and the whole family are awesome and impeccable hosts. Whether it's fishing, diving, spear fishing, or just relaxing - they've got you covered. I've dived around the world and this beats everywhere I've been, hands down. Highly recommend to everyone.

Matafonua is an unbelievable place! It's run by Darren and Nina who live with their lovely children on the premises. They have created a truly magnificent place. The resort is right on the tip of Foa island and you are surrounded by picturesque ocean and beautiful beaches on three sides. The snorkeling and diving are unbelievable and if you go... More

Unfortunately we didn't stay at Matafonua because bungalows were still in construction after the 2014 cyclone. Kitesurfing: This is a world class spot. It is right in front the resort. You can kite in all wind direction. The water is just perfect shallow. You have probably a 500m to 1500m playground. A nice beach were you can launch at low... More

We had planned to stay at Matafonua in January 2014 but Cyclone Ian tore through Ha'apai and we sheltered in Pangai at Fifita's Guesthouse leaving soon after with a promise to return - and we're so glad we did! We spent quite a bit of time with Darren and Nina swapping cyclone stories and tales of island life. Our son... More

We had an incredible time diving with Darren at matafonua. I have never met such hospitable ,friendly people - Darren and Nina looked after us and showed us the true foa island! They know the best dive spots - we saw sharks, sea snakes and all kinds of things and we always felt safe despite our relative inexperience diving. The... More

We went out whale watching twice at the end of September with Jodie our guide, who had a comprehensive knowledge of whale behaviour and showed great respect in the way they are treated. On the first day we saw whales breaching, fin flapping and tail slapping. Day two we followed a mother with her calf and a female escort. We... More

This was by far the most moving experience in my life. To see and experience the mother and her calf so close changed my life. Darren and his entire team and especially Jody and Gary were fabulous. To be there and actually also see his Drone video was fabulous. Despite the fact that Matafonua experienced a terrible wipe out from... More

Visited Matafonua Lodge and went on 2 whale watching days - one with Darren and one with Jodie. Both trips were very successful and have quite a few swims with a mother and baby whale which was absolutely amazing. Very informative and enjoyable day!! Beautiful clean beaches and very clear water great for snorkelling. Made to feel very welcome and... More

We went out for whale watching with them and we had one of those special moments of out live. The guide Gerry did a fantastic job, with lots of respect he treated the whales. The food on the boot was wondeful and the staff very helpful. You should book the tours directly with them. The onwer Nina and Darren are... More
