An amazing holiday from start to finish. A couple of amazing dives, plenty of snorkeling with a wide variety of options right at the resort and plenty of amazing sights nearby. Add in the kayaks, paddle boards and beautiful location and it was an amazing holiday. Matafonua is located on the tip of the island which means that it is... More

What an amazing spot, so close to New Zealand but yet it's own little world :) Couldn't want for any more from the resort, great toys to play with, amazing natural playground to explore and brilliant hosts!! We can't wait to come back!!

We traveled to Matafonua as a group of 4 couples for four nights over Easter. Air Tonga flights were all arranged by Nina. Despite a few changes by Air Tonga leading up to our departure date we got there hassle free and were collected by Darren on arrival. The trade winds were blowing but this didn't hamper our weekend at... More

Had a amazing time - would def come back. Beautiful white sandy beaches, great diving (awesome visibility). Good range of water activities ie stand up paddle boards, snorkelling, kayaking + more. Fales are basic but really clean and well presented - feel really authentic. Shared facilities but was never a problem and they were always kept clean. Staff are all... More

My partner and I recently traveled to Tonga (our first visit). We flew into Tongatapu direct with Virgin Australia (only a 5 hr flight). Arriving at 1am ish, I had to decide whether to stay a night in Tongatapu before taking a domestic flight to Ha'apai where Matafonua Resort is located. After making a quick call to Nina (the owner... Beyond all our expectations. This place is amazing. Darren, Nina and the whole family are awesome and impeccable hosts. Whether it's fishing, diving, spear fishing, or just relaxing - they've got you covered. I've dived around the world and this beats everywhere I've been, hands down. Highly recommend to everyone.

Matafonua is an unbelievable place! It's run by Darren and Nina who live with their lovely children on the premises. They have created a truly magnificent place. The resort is right on the tip of Foa island and you are surrounded by picturesque ocean and beautiful beaches on three sides. The snorkeling and diving are unbelievable and if you go... More

Unfortunately we didn't stay at Matafonua because bungalows were still in construction after the 2014 cyclone. Kitesurfing: This is a world class spot. It is right in front the resort. You can kite in all wind direction. The water is just perfect shallow. You have probably a 500m to 1500m playground. A nice beach were you can launch at low... More

We had planned to stay at Matafonua in January 2014 but Cyclone Ian tore through Ha'apai and we sheltered in Pangai at Fifita's Guesthouse leaving soon after with a promise to return - and we're so glad we did! We spent quite a bit of time with Darren and Nina swapping cyclone stories and tales of island life. Our son... More
