We recently stayed at neighbouring Sandy Beach Resort (Matafonua Lodge was not up and running again after the February 2014 Hurricane) and were booked in for 4 days of Whale Watching with Guides Gary and Jodie from Matafonua Lodge. The tours were so well organised and easy to get to from Sandy Beach, we just had to walk down the... More

We did not stay at Matafouna lodge as they are in the process of rebuilding after the cyclone and are hoping to have this ready soon. Our review is about their boat trips which we went on which were fabulous. We booked 5 days to swim with whales and they certainly delivered. We swum with Mothers and babies, a wonderful... More

We came to Foa, unaware of the recent hurricane. Matafonua had been damaged really bad. But that didn't stop Darren and Nina from helping us with everything from renting kayaks, go for diving trips and having somewhere to stay. They didn't just open their resort for us but also their home. We ended up having the best time ever! The... More

I visited Matafonua in Ha'apai recently and had a great holiday! The resort looked great - even better than when I previously stayed in 2007 and visited in 2010. The accommodation (Family Fale) was basic, was clean and tidy. The beds were comfy for split Kings. There was electricity in the Fale, which was great for charging my phone through... More

We only stayed for 4 days at Matafonua lodge but it was perfect for us. It is very isolated and other then whale watching/swimming, diving and snorkelling, there isn't tons to do/see, so a great place to find a spot on the beach and unwind. The rooms are basic but very comfortable with a lovely little patio with a perfect... More

Don't hesitate! Just book it! We had high expectations of Matafonoa and it more than lived up to them! The location is perfect with 2 beaches... one for sunrises and one for sunsets. What better way to be lulled to sleep than the sound of the waves on your doorstep? The fales are simple but ideal with extremely comfortable beds.... More

Fantastic location, not too crowded, but good company if you want it. Beautiful beach and water with good snorkelling right there. The most amazing Humpback Whale snorkell and experience. All staff very friendly with awesome hosts Nina and Darren. Really good food, especially Nina's deserts and Darrens mains. Garry was a great dive instructor, very patient and understanding but proffessional. The fales were simple and... More

Such a beautiful place! Loved the fales! Nina and Darren are wonderful hosts and looked after us very well. Darren's dinners AND Nina's deserts were delicious. Snorkelling was great right outside the fales and I'd definitely recommend going for a dive! (Thanks again for the incredible photos!!) Couldn't have asked for more, we hope to see you guys again during... More

Cant ask for better, more friendly and welcoming hosts. Excellent location, quiet, superb whale encounters! Thanks for a magical time! Simple accommodation, ideally suited to a remote island getaway. Great food, excellent and experienced whale guides who are conscious of the impact of people around whales while still achieving fantastic whale-swim opportunities.
