This guest house, which takes only female visitors, is located on the second floor of a large, 100-year old home in the North Lawndale neighborhood in Chicago. It's about five miles from downtown and two blocks from an El stop. The neighborhood is ethnic and has vacant lots and foreclosures, but I didn't have any trouble coming or going. (Having a car helps for evening trips.) The price was right.

The owner is an artist and has a gallery on the first floor. The second floor has three bedrooms, all with bright colors and original art; a bathroom with a clawfoot tub; and a kitchen and living room. I stayed in the middle bedroom with a double bed. It was comfortable and relatively quiet. (The El is nearby but you get used to it.) It was very convenient to have the kitchen because I could eat after coming home from my conference or have a snack in the evening. There is reading material and a TV in the living room for guests. No phones or TV in the bedrooms.

It was freezing cold. The manager slept in the room next to me with no door on her room. There was no lock on my door. The smoke detector beeped the entire time I was there from a low battery that she didn't want to bother changing (even though I offered to help with the ladder). She also had a dog that shed all over the couches in the lounge. I never got a receipt for my visit because she couldn't find it. Although I wasn't expecting luxurious accomodations, it would have been nice to at least... more

I am sorry these folks didn't have a good time here. They didn't say any of these things to me when they left but indicated everything was o.k. I don't usually have people stay in the room they stayed in but they wanted to stay here anyway. I was full. The office they had to walk through to get to...
