This guest house, which takes only female visitors, is located on the second floor of a large, 100-year old home in the North Lawndale neighborhood in Chicago. It's about five miles from downtown and two blocks from an El stop. The neighborhood is ethnic and has vacant lots and foreclosures, but I didn't have any trouble coming or going. (Having a car helps for evening trips.) The price was right.
The owner is an artist and has a gallery on the first floor. The second floor has three bedrooms, all with bright colors and original art; a bathroom with a clawfoot tub; and a kitchen and living room. I stayed in the middle bedroom with a double bed. It was comfortable and relatively quiet. (The El is nearby but you get used to it.) It was very convenient to have the kitchen because I could eat after coming home from my conference or have a snack in the evening. There is reading material and a TV in the living room for guests. No phones or TV in the bedrooms.
