When staying in Sun Valley, summer or winter, head north 30 miles to the Galena Lodge. In summer, great hiking. In winter, great X-country skiing and snow shoeing. All year round, great food and hospitality. The drive there and beyond to Galena Summit overlooking the Salmon River Valley is beautiful. Use Galena Lodge as a destination or a stop along... More

I love everything about Galena Lodge ~ the charming, old log building, the wonderful soups, the stunning, groomed cross-country ski trails, the friendly staff and volunteers, the cozy yurts (complete with sauna) and the usually sunny, blue-bird days. Two nights ago friends and I were skiing under the full moon. Magical.

Nice place to stop and enjoy the scenery, get warm, have beer, coffee or tea. And grab a bite to eat or go to the little gift shop. We came with a large group. I didn't eat but everyone else had something and they liked the food. Stop and have a look if you are in the area.

we arrived about 10 am from SV, got tickets and headed out onto the ski trails. There are numerous routes, from easy to difficult, and each is clearly signed. Maps are conveniently placed around the course, with over 40KM of trails. We started on an easy, then had lunch, and finished with a blue run. Speaking of lunch, the grilled... More

Delicious lunch with a big deck, and lots of ambiance. The food was so much better than we expected, the lamb burger in particular, sourced from a local farm, with really nice spicy aoli, and a fresh baked bun. My husband and I enjoyed sitting out on the deck after doing some local hiking. All in all a gorgeous drive... More

Let's just start off by saying Galena has some tough nordic trails! That being said, there is great snowshoe trails, and anyone can do that. Take the beautiful drive under the Boulder Mountains and go for a GREAT lunch. Weekends during the winter can be crowded, but don't be afraid to share a table that is being under utilized. We... Galena Lodge is not a lodge, it is a warming hut, meeting place, and rest stop, with a restaurant and small outdoor store--and it's terrific. The ambiance is perfect: in the dead of winter there is a fire in the fireplace, lots of tables and a few comfy chairs, and great soups to warm you through. Best of all is... More

We snowshoed some of the trails around Galena Lodge. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. The food looked amazing, but honestly we didn't eat lunch there. They had multiple soups, some vegan and veg, and other yummy-looking sandwiches and baked goods. Also had beer and wine. Was a little pricey, but sure looked and smelled good. $5 per person... More

Summer or winter, Galena puts even the casual tourist in the heart of the mountains. It is only open during season, so please check. In the summer, there is great hiking, horseback riding, and dining on the lawn. Certain nights, there are historic ore wagon trips and BBQs. There are also special moonlight dinners. Check on availability of yurt stays.... More

Located 20+ miles north of Ketchum, ID, Galena Lodge is worth the drive summer or winter (closed spring & fall, check website for hours). The small building is the last remaining structure of once was a booming mining town. Saved from distruction by the family of the late U.S. Senator John Heinz the "lodge" (there are no overnight accommodations in... More
