My husband and I had both long dreamed of visiting Africa and having a safari experience. The Makakatana Bay Lodge was honestly perfect in every way. The staff were professional, warm and genuinely caring and they went absolutely above and beyond to make certain that our honeymoon was perfect and unforgettable. Staying here was like staying with family---albeit family that... More

What an incredibly experience. The chalets are lovely, service is excellent, and the food is very good. More importantly, though, the safaris are included - and they are fantastic. We stayed for 3 nights, and were able to go on 3 separate ones: one in Hluhluwe Park for the traditional experience (so many rhinos!), a riverboat tour (hippos!), and an... More

A beautiful lodge situated inside Isimangaliso world heritage site. Incredible staff, they are extremely knowledgable and accommodating, the meals are absolutely delicious, our room was beautiful with a beautiful view. If you are looking for peace and tranquillity in the bush together with royal treatment this is the best lodge ever and it comes highly recommended. Excellent game drives and... More

We spent two nights here and expected after our experiences in Sabi Sands more flora and fauna from the wetlands here. That was the reason we came here. It turned out not all we expected! We had room 6 and the room and the lodge are very nice and beautiful! Our view was over the wetlands and we saw hippos... More

This is one of the nicest Lodges I have ever had the privilege to stay at. It is on the more expensive side, but so well worth it. All your meals are included plus all the activities, so in the end it is not that much more than other places where you pay for bed and breakfast only. The food... More

A incredible staff and attention to the guests. A warm welcome and service during our stay. What is special in this lodge and make the experience unique is the staff: owners, rangers, cookers, room staff, etc... and, the fact that it is small and thus calm. We were only 7 during our stay (our family of 5 + a couple).... More

Spent an awesome couple of days here to visit my son who works at this lodge. It was a delightful place - right on the edge of Lake St Lucia. I loved the tranquility of it all and the lushness of the vegetation. My room was very comfortable and loved the out door shower. Sitting outside on my veranda looking... More

The staff at the Makakatana Bay Lodge are what makes it. As is so often the case at (very) small hotels - in this case there are only six rooms - the infectious enthusiasm and skill of the staff throughout the hotel are the things that make a place like this stand out from a larger chain. The reception staff... More

Exceptional service and attention to detail, delicious meals - including dinner under the stars - personable staff. This World Heritage Site offers a close up view of hippos, lots of birds, and the big 4 (no lions, and we didn't get a look at the leopard here), close up views of giraffe, zebra, various herds of bucks, and a huge,... We stayed at Makakatana Bay Lodge for three nights in July after having been to a number of more traditional Big 5 game lodges. We chose Makakatana because of the uniqueness of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the limited number of guests (6 chalets) and to wind down on our way back to Johannesburg. The lodge itself is well set out... More
