Exceptional service and attention to detail, delicious meals - including dinner under the stars - personable staff. This World Heritage Site offers a close up view of hippos, lots of birds, and the big 4 (no lions, and we didn't get a look at the leopard here), close up views of giraffe, zebra, various herds of bucks, and a huge,... We stayed at Makakatana Bay Lodge for three nights in July after having been to a number of more traditional Big 5 game lodges. We chose Makakatana because of the uniqueness of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the limited number of guests (6 chalets) and to wind down on our way back to Johannesburg. The lodge itself is well set out... More

Spent two nights of our honeymoon at Makakatana. Unfortunately the honeymoon suite was being remodeled, but our room was still terrific. Little odd to ONLY have an outdoor shower (and inside tub), especially as it was winter and a bit chilly...but after the initial shock wore off it was an outstanding experience, shared with a few spiders and some glancing... The lodge was kind enough to arrange a special day tour, focussing on birding. 95 species seen in one day! This has to rank as the ultimate birding paradise. The food was also excellent, and I will be poaching the chef when I win the lotto. It was quite magical, with an elephant eating the garden plants, and bush babies... More

Sabine and I had our first encounter with a private game lodge at Makakatana, which is located in the heart of iSimangaliso Wetland Park. It's actually the only lodge within te park. The first impression of the lodge was a cosy one with excellent personal service and attention. The rooms are spacious with a great view and off course a... More

We stayed for two nights at this peaceful privately owned lodge. Upon our arrival we were greeted and warmly welcomed by the lodge's management and staff members. Although it rained very heavily during our visit, our bush guide, Kyle, came up with excellent alternatives. We had plenty of opportunity to view wildlife right at the lodge and on the guided... Spent 4 relaxing days at Makakatana in Oct 2013. Chalet was clean and comfortable - no issues. was very private. Food was good, ambiance pleasant, staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. Owner showed keen interest in guests comfort and enjoyment. Some game around, saw Rhino, Buffalo, Giraffe, Hippos and crocs a plenty. Very interesting and informative boat trip on the lake... More
