We stayed at the Sea Turtle Inn for a 4-day family reunion in September. Our "go-to" Vero Beach hotel was already booked, but this one looked cute enough online. I wish I had paid attention to the bad reviews. The photos on the website are a complete misrepresentation. At most, there are one or two renovated rooms which appear in the website photos -- the rest are old, in poor condition, and inundated with mold. (We had 5 rooms for our group) Like one of the other reviewers, we checked in late, so a key was left for us. We walked into room #10 and were hit with the most awful mildew smell. In retrospect, we should have called the emergency number to get a room change, but we decided to make the best of it. As I do with all hotels we stay in, I wiped surfaces down with disinfecting wipes. I have never seen a dirtier room. There was visible mold on walls and air conditioner, broken or stained furniture, and towels that looked like rags. Worst of all was the mildew smell. It was so hard to breathe that we slept with Covid masks on. The next morning, we spoke to the manager and were told the smell was the cleaning product they use. Really? He gave us a different room, which was better (how could it not be?), but by no means great. The room itself was in better condition, but still had a mildew odor and mold on the air conditioner. For the duration of our stay, we left all the windows open unless we were out, and tried to spend as little time as possible in the room. The worst part of the whole experience occurred when we got home. We realized that everything we brought on the trip reeked of mildew. All of our clothes, our suitcases and cloth carry-on bags, the fabric-lined cover of my ipad, hairbrushes, straw hats -- EVERYTHING -- had to be washed and/or aired out multiple times. We sprayed our suitcases and non-washable items inside and out repeatedly with white vinegar and left them in the sun to air out. Two months later, the smell still lingers on some bags and clothes, even after being soaked in white vinegar. I still can't believe the lasting effects of this hotel stay -- not to mention the hidden effect on our health. On the outside, the property looks cute and has nice landscaping, with a great location. But at what cost? This is the perfect example of looks being deceiving. Turn and run -- stay anywhere else.…
