Made a spur-of-the-moment trip to attend an event at The Kate in Old Saybrook. The Griswold Inn was listed in my 2009-2009 Select Registry, a listing of distinguished inns/B&Bs, and just minutes away. When I called to reserve, I was told they're no longer affiliated with Select Registry, and it's easy to see why. While the tavern is full of... More

Every Monday night, we trek over to the Gris in Essex for Sea Shantey night. The Jovial Crew show up, and play sea/sailor ballads late into the night. Revolutionary Ale flows from the taps at reasonable prices, and the crowd really gets into it. I would recommend getting there early, getting a table, and enjoying your night. It's an historic... A spontaneous decision to get to the sea for a quick trip. Chose a place I had not ever been and was a fairly short distance from my residence (1.45hr.) The Griswold Inn is right in the historic district, and had a room with a water view available. All of the desk and administrative people were extremely pleasant and helpful.... More

Stayed one night here. Happy with the room and the hotel is charming in a quirky way! The room was fine with a pull out sofa bed which my son slept on and said it was comfortable. The room itself was chintzy but this added to its old world charm.

We had cocktails in the bar. The Inn was founded in the later 1700s and the bar added early 1800s, it is quite the experience. This is a place where you literally "belly up to the bar" - there are no bar stools. Not to worry though, there are tables and chairs. The bar is very small and can get... More

We found a proper pub in New England! The only thing we really miss about the UK having moved across are proper pubs. This has a lovely ambience, history, nice lighting, good local ale and decent food. It even has proper fish and chips. The front bar is the place to really soak it up, but the dining area in... We've been overnight guests years ago at Christmas and it's been a lifelong joy! Tho visit was for a meal. The Griswold Fish and Chips was so fresh and tasty, I ate too quickly! My wife tried the watermelon and feta salad. Pomegranate balsamic dressing with pistachio's. It was also very tasty. The best surprise was the "Coney island hard... More

Had dinner at the Griswold Inn last week while in the Essex area. The dinner was delicious. My husband's chowder was very thick and tasty. He had short ribs, which he enjoyed. I had cod with crabmeat. Very tasty too.

This beautiful establishment has been around for over 200 hundred years, filled with incredible history. For all you complaining reviewers, you obviously have no clue how to appreciate our rich history. It was like being in a museum. What a wonderful place. Different live music every night. I especially want to acknowledge Maura who works the front desk. She is... More

Regardless of other "recently published reviews", one should not visit inns that are older and have retained an aesthetic and rustic charm..if you are looking for glamorous splendor, then go elsewhere..We thoroughly enjoyed our visit..everyone there made us and our grand daughters feel most welcome..the area is beautiful, the noteworthy, the Conn river is a block away...
