My wife and I met some friends for brunch yesterday at the Gris. It had been awhile since we had been there and the memories of a wide assortment of buffet items was in my mind when I made the reservation. Sadly now there aren't any carving stations and the fare consisted of canned fruit cocktail, a plain green salad,... More

The Griswold Inn was built in 1776 and it's history is intriguing. The staff is great, the food wonderful and The Tap Room vivacious. I cannot wait to stay there again. The village is quaint and lovely. This should be on more people's "bucket list"!!

Thanks so much for your wonderful comments and for choosing to stay with us. We look forward to your return visit to Essex noted as "The Perfect American Small Town” and The Griswold Inn, truly a “must experience”, in 1000 Places to see Before You Die. Gratefully, The Paul Family More

By what fair measure does one assess lodging dating to 1776? One would have to be brain dead and exceedingly unfair to demand of such a place the same or similar creature comforts a Hyatt Regency might customarily offer. Indeed one SELECTS a place like The Gris precisely because it does not promise that experience. So, when we came to... More

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You “get” the ‘Gris’ and the experience we offer here. We love when that happens and so appreciate you sharing your comments with the traveling public. As you stated, if one is looking for the predictability of a corporate chain, you’re not going to find it at The Griswold Inn. You will find, as... More

Wonderful historic inn in a beautiful small town. Stayed in the family cottage. The kids loved it. However. ... I had emailed and let the inn know that I was disabled and traveling with small children and that I needed late check out. So they recommended the family cottage, conveniently the most expensive room they have. They said it would... More

I agree with the pros and cons of most everyone's review. The Inn is a little shabby without the chic but that kind of what made it so charming too. It's in a beautiful old historic building with a great tavern attached and restaurant. Yes it was small. Yes it needs updating but I would stay here again without a... More

My daughter had stayed at the Griswold for a wedding a few years ago and found it so charming that she and her sister gave me a gift certificate for a night or two away. We had traveled a lot this summer and this was by far the most wonderful experience we had. Our room was just lovely, fresh, clean,... More

We stayed at the Griswold Inn for two nights in the Family Cottage across the street. It was great for two adults and three children. It has two levels -upstairs 2 double beds and bath and downstairs a pullout sofa bed (loveseat) and bathroom. The upholstery is in need of updating and cleaning, however we covered with sheets. I know... More

We didn't stay at the Inn, but did have lunch there twice. We ate inside once, and enjoyed the décor and walls dripping with history throughout. The second time was very pleasant outside, so we ate outdoors. The lobster rolls (they serve both the hot and cold variety) were excellent, as were their beers on tap and they made a... More

I've been using the Griswold off and on for 20 years and little has changed. A lovely welcome, good food, great bar with nightly music, characterful rooms .... not to mention its location right in the middle of the beautiful town of Essex, close to the beaches and marinas of the Connecticut shoreline. Our two stays here were probably the... More

We stayed at the Griswold Inn as a member of wedding party. While the location was wonderful, the facility was poor to terrible. We were in room 22 which is a tiny room. We're OK with tiny rooms, but this one was a fine example of the hotel trying to make a few extra bucks without thinking of their guest's... More
