Stopped in for a couple of drinks. What history this place has. A nice bar in what felt like a nautical museum. The building makes you feel like your back in time. There were some neat firearms there as well. The bar had a great popcorn machine that we enjoyed as well. They had 5 out so beers on tap.

If you seek contemporary furnishings, modern conveniences, HD TV (or any TV in your room for that matter), temperature controlled environments and hip nightlife, the Griswold Inn is probably not for you, but... ... if your nostalgic for Old New England, if you think it would be an amazing experience to dine in an old transplanted covered bridge, or have... We really loved our 2 night stay at the Griswold! It was right after Christmas and the Inn was quite busy but we never felt ignored. They are wonderful to their guests. We stayed in a suite (room 5) and because it was away from the tavern area we couldn't hear any noise from there even though it was quite... More

The Griswold Inn is old and quaint and certainly interesting if you are a history buff but is well below average as a comfortable place to stay. I specificly asked for a quiet room because I has been told that rooms near the bar could be noisy and was assured that I was a separate building and it should be... More

The quaint town of Essex Connecticut has a gem in it. The historic Griswald Inn is gorgeous! The moment you walk inside you feel like you have stepped back to the late 1700's. The decor has you wanting to know the stories of how this town came about. Feel free to ask as they will gladly tell you.The Inn's staff... More

My wife and I met some friends for brunch yesterday at the Gris. It had been awhile since we had been there and the memories of a wide assortment of buffet items was in my mind when I made the reservation. Sadly now there aren't any carving stations and the fare consisted of canned fruit cocktail, a plain green salad,... More

The Griswold Inn was built in 1776 and it's history is intriguing. The staff is great, the food wonderful and The Tap Room vivacious. I cannot wait to stay there again. The village is quaint and lovely. This should be on more people's "bucket list"!!

By what fair measure does one assess lodging dating to 1776? One would have to be brain dead and exceedingly unfair to demand of such a place the same or similar creature comforts a Hyatt Regency might customarily offer. Indeed one SELECTS a place like The Gris precisely because it does not promise that experience. So, when we came to... More

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You “get” the ‘Gris’ and the experience we offer here. We love when that happens and so appreciate you sharing your comments with the traveling public. As you stated, if one is looking for the predictability of a corporate chain, you’re not going to find it at The Griswold Inn. You will find, as... More

Wonderful historic inn in a beautiful small town. Stayed in the family cottage. The kids loved it. However. ... I had emailed and let the inn know that I was disabled and traveling with small children and that I needed late check out. So they recommended the family cottage, conveniently the most expensive room they have. They said it would... More

I agree with the pros and cons of most everyone's review. The Inn is a little shabby without the chic but that kind of what made it so charming too. It's in a beautiful old historic building with a great tavern attached and restaurant. Yes it was small. Yes it needs updating but I would stay here again without a... More
