Talk about history the Gris est. in 1776 is a great dining experience for the whole family with great history included! Had one of the best salads ever with over 20 different lettuce! Great Arms Museum in Historic Essex!!!

The Gris is a colonial era treasure in the town of Essex, a close knit community that exudes everything that is and was colonial New England. Nestled on the banks of the Connecticut River, the town seems frozen in time. Enter the Griswold Inn and you are immediately transported back to pre-revolutionary colonial America. This eighteenth century inn has been... More

We went to the Gris Wednesday December 30th. The four of us had one of the best times we have had in years of getting together. The food and atmosphere were over the top, but I have to say that our waitress, Nancy was responsible for us having such a fantastic experience. Nancy's personality and service were what made our... The Inn dates back to 1776. Filled with nooks and crannies, No two rooms are alike. Music in the tap room. The Wine Bar a must. Ines, the manager, friendly and knowledgeable. A four course meal with 4 3 oz glasses of wines to match each course.

We luckily picked the perfect foliage & weather week to travel in late October. One of our stop-overs was the Griswold Inn in Essex CT. The oldest continuously operated Inn and Tavern in the United States. It is charmingly old. We had a 4 poster bed with a nice bathroom. Our dinner was delightful. We did not eat in the... More

The Inn was crowded, but our reservation's table for 10 people was right on time. Our waitress was somewhat scattered but the order was correct. My salmon was very good, and two special needs folks were satisfied. But the folks who ordered the game pot pie were disappointed with little meat and under-cooked veggies. The carolers were a lovely touch... More

I've stayed here for business 4 years in a row. This place is really, really neat. The Griswold is the oldest operating inn in the US. They are very friendly, and the rooms give you a warm feeling with their old-time look. The town of Essex is very cute. You simply can't go wrong by staying here.

My wife and I arrived a half hour early for our 7pm Thanksgiving reservation and were met with a rather patronizing hostess who answered our inquiries into being seated early and where we would be seated (there are various rooms) with the unfriendly terseness of someone who had clearly had a long day at her job. That set a rather... More

We were very disheartened to read your review pertaining to your Thanksgiving experience. It was surprising and disappointing that you did not receive a warm welcome upon arrival as we frequently receive compliments regarding our staff''s friendly nature. No matter what the circumstance, the behavior is inexcusable. Most of our guests appreciate the great value of our bountiful Thanksgiving meal,... More

I have eaten at the inn various times and it never occurred to me to write a review. Have never had a bad meal from the Pub Menu...have eaten outside on the patio, inside in the bar with accompanying music, inside in a cozy corner by a fireplace today. Festive atmosphere always. Crowded and busy is the norm, but service... More

It might have been nice if we were told that the meal was a buffet when we made the reservation...especially since we had someone in our party who could not do a buffet. Bread served with cocktails but no bread dishes...crumbs all over the table. Constant stream of guests parading by with their plates. Food was okay but nothing to... More

Clearly a buffet was not what you were looking for on Thanksgiving and we're sorry that it wasn't effectively communicated. Every year for the Thanksgiving feast we offer a bountiful spread served buffet style. We have found this is the best way to serve the great number of guests we have joining us for these festive occasions and on Thanksgiving... More
