I agree with the pros and cons of most everyone's review. The Inn is a little shabby without the chic but that kind of what made it so charming too. It's in a beautiful old historic building with a great tavern attached and restaurant. Yes it was small. Yes it needs updating but I would stay here again without a... More

My daughter had stayed at the Griswold for a wedding a few years ago and found it so charming that she and her sister gave me a gift certificate for a night or two away. We had traveled a lot this summer and this was by far the most wonderful experience we had. Our room was just lovely, fresh, clean,... More

We stayed at the Griswold Inn for two nights in the Family Cottage across the street. It was great for two adults and three children. It has two levels -upstairs 2 double beds and bath and downstairs a pullout sofa bed (loveseat) and bathroom. The upholstery is in need of updating and cleaning, however we covered with sheets. I know... More

We didn't stay at the Inn, but did have lunch there twice. We ate inside once, and enjoyed the décor and walls dripping with history throughout. The second time was very pleasant outside, so we ate outdoors. The lobster rolls (they serve both the hot and cold variety) were excellent, as were their beers on tap and they made a... More

I've been using the Griswold off and on for 20 years and little has changed. A lovely welcome, good food, great bar with nightly music, characterful rooms .... not to mention its location right in the middle of the beautiful town of Essex, close to the beaches and marinas of the Connecticut shoreline. Our two stays here were probably the... More

We stayed at the Griswold Inn as a member of wedding party. While the location was wonderful, the facility was poor to terrible. We were in room 22 which is a tiny room. We're OK with tiny rooms, but this one was a fine example of the hotel trying to make a few extra bucks without thinking of their guest's... More

The bar is always excellent with live music every light and friendly people. Popcorn wafs the air in the bar and homemade chips are a specialty. Kids are welcome to listen to the music as well as dancing and singing with the band.

My husband and I stayed at the Inn this past weekend. We were in room 2. Quiet and peaceful, although it was a Sunday night. The whole street was asleep :) Our stay was average. No one really seemed to care if we were there or not, unfortunately. My husband had asked for a bit of special treatment for me... More

The town is magical as is the historic nature and ambiance of the hotel. It is like staying in a museum. Nevertheless, the rooms need refurbishing especially the window treatments and very noisy window a/c. The service and people are wonderful as is the location but be forewarned as to what you will be getting. All said though we really... More

and each time we check in we're asked if this is our first time. Odd, in the digital age. The Inn is lovely, but they do seem to have lightbulb problems (ours was out in the shower) as others have mentioned - disconnect between housekeeping and management, I guess The bar is lively on a Friday night with a great...
