Stayed in Cottage 2 at Mountain Motel just before Christmas. Ira was an excellent host, very personable and accommodating. The cottage was clean and had everything we needed and the beds were comfortable. We loved the rustic decor. We would definitely stay at Mountain Motel again.

I was amazed with my room - it was huge with 2 queen beds, couch, kitchen table and large bathroom. There is something to be said for not staying at a chain hotel and supporting local businesses. I was just about to use points to stay at a more expensive chain, but glad I opted for the Mountain Motel. I... More

I've used trip advisor for many years now, but have never written a review like this. We are monarch season pass holders from 2.5 hr drive and decided to stay over. Affordable, clean, and what business is supposed to be about. Good value and doing the right thing. Personalized attention from the moment we checked in where he actually remembered... More

The room was well furnished and clean. Everything was comfortable and the room was nicely decorated with rustic knick-knacks. The motel manager (Ira) was very laid back and said he did not want to charge extra for our dogs because he has found in the past that dogs don't really cause any problems. This was like a breath of fresh... More

I booked this hotel wanting the small town feel, and hoped it would be comfortable like the reviews say. We arrived at the hotel after a long day of skiing, and found no one at the desk. 30 minutes later, the owner arrived after walking his dogs. Needless to say, we thought about throwing in the towel, and going down... More

We were a little hesitant reserving a room that wasn't one of the "chain" motels, but we were SO pleased with our stay here! The rooms were up-to-date and the owner was so nice and helpful. They put us and our friends in adjoining rooms with a full kitchen which helped us as we were eating in our entire stay.... More

A great comfortable location. Cottage #4 is clean, rustic, cozy and comfortable. Two queen sizes beds in separate rooms with a kitchenette. The value of Ira's hospitality, knowledge of the area and becoming your friend enhances the experience. So relax and enjoy all the Salida has.

You can't ask for a better value than the Mountain Motel. Ira (the host) was wonderful and accommodated all of our needs. He even let us switch to a larger cottage when last-minute friends decided to join us. I love that it's dog-friendly and located minutes from downtown Salida and less than 30 minutes from Monarch Mountain. It was warm... More

My husband and I had a wonderful time staying in Cottage #2. There were two queen size beds and a twin bed. It was especially nice that one queen bed was softer and one was firmer - perfect for a Husband and Wife that sleep better separately, and one who needs a firmer bed and one who needs soft. The... Nice rooms and good value for the money. Our room (#9) had a loud heater that did not allow everyone to sleep soundly. Otherwise, everyone else in our group of 10 had a nice stay and good night's sleep. The owner, Ira, is very accomodating. My in-laws gave this motel a five "dot" rating. Be careful using Google Maps to... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hitchin’ Post Motel cabins, formerly known as the Mountain Motel welcomed its first guests in 1947. In 1996, six more rooms were built to accommodate the tremendous influx of visitors to the motel. The Hitchin’ Post Motel has been a family endeavor, being locally owned and operated since 1947… over 55 years! In December 2011, the owners of The Mountain Motel felt that it was time to showcase the charm and history of the motel by changing the name to The Hitchin’ Post Motel representing the by-gone era of the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. After transforming the office area into a lounge and reading room, the energetic owners set to work to begin outfitting the remaining nine rooms with an exhaustive inventory of Mountain Western Retro furniture, fixtures and room décor. Their vision to make the Hitchin’Post, Salida’s FIRST “boutique mote;” and reinventing an American icon – the roadside motel is coming to life!Foremost in the minds of the staff at the Hitchin’Post Motel is to provide guests with a comfortable, cozy, distinctive and memorable stay. One-size DOES NOT fit all! Each room has been reimagined to bring in the owner’s own style to make each room personable and “one-of-a-kind.” Room décor is “Mountain Western Retro” – reminiscent of properties dating back to the 1940’s, 1950’s, and early 1960’s. We consider our motel an ever evolving work of “motel art,” where updates and décor are an on-going effort. We pride ourselves on being the only local motel to bring the “boutique motel” experience to guests visiting Salida.A locally owned motel, the Hitchin’ Post Motel is noticeably different in look and feel from other hotel/motel chains – we love it when our guests are pleasantly “surprised” to find that the motel offers much more than a room to sleep. We invite YOU to share our “Mountain Western Retro” experience! Whether it be… sharing a bowl of chili on a cold day with other guests, or sipping the special “Hitchin’Post Ice Tea on a hot day… your stay at the Hitchin’Post Motel in Salida, Colorado will be a memory to share forever and keep you coming back, year after year. ... more   less
