Strater Hotel has all the charm of an old historic hotel to make a stay in Durango perfect. This was our third stay in four years. We got a great last minute deal on a room with a queen bed on the fourth floor. No coffee pot in the room, but we found coffee and tea (great tasting coffee too)... More

I've stayed at this hotel twice in my lifetime. Once as a child, and now many, many years later. The family lore is that we left in the middle of the night because the noise from the saloon was keeping everybody awake. Note to travelers, ask for rooms on the higher 3rd or 4th floors and away from the saloon,... More

I stayed at the Strater for two nights on a business trip and it wasn't a good fit. The location on Main Avenue is good and the outside of the building is very pretty. The public spaces and restaurants are really nice and very old timey Victorian feeling. The restaurant staff was lovely and welcoming, the food was good. Breakfast... More

We stayed in a huge King de-luxe room in early October. The guest book was a nice touch but it was full so we couldn't add any comments, sadly all the reports of a ghost in our room failed to come true! The room was very cosy and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was functional but I missed a... More

Great old hotel with wonderful atmosphere. Room prices are a little steep, but you are paying for the atmosphere. I say just accept that fact. We stayed for two nights during a "Fall Color" road trip through Western Colorado. We had a premium queen room and it was very large and comfortable. For a hotel of this age, it has... More

On a recent one night stay got a Deluxe Queen on 2nd Floor. As near as I could tell it was in the older part of the hotel. We were very impressed by the obvious effort that had been put into its latest restoration (whenever that had been). Quiet; good mattress; impressive decoration/antiques; all bath fixtures worked just fine. Front... More

The Strater Hotel is a piece of Old West history in the town of Durango, Colorado. That was the prime reason I wanted to stay there for a couple of nights during an 8-day photographic road trip of the state. The hotel is located along the historic and funky main street of the town. Parking is a little "iffy" because... More

The Strater is like a shiny old silver dollar that's only worth 65 cents. On first blush it's great: historic old building, excellent location in the historic old town, wonderful 1880s-style lobby. Staying there, however, leaves a lot of to desired. The free continental breakfast is awful. In the rooms they give you one tiny bar of soap, no pen... More
