The Strater is like a shiny old silver dollar that's only worth 65 cents. On first blush it's great: historic old building, excellent location in the historic old town, wonderful 1880s-style lobby. Staying there, however, leaves a lot of to desired. The free continental breakfast is awful. In the rooms they give you one tiny bar of soap, no pen... More

We stayed on the top floor looking out over the main street. It was a very pleasant room decorated in high Victorian manner. The hotel is well maintained and staff friendly and efficient. Great breakfast. Close to everything including the train. Our room had a visitors book on the bed and many were inspired to reveal their bedtime activities; one... More

Stayed here for one night only. The room was very nice and decorated with Victorian furniture but had a modern flat screen t.v. It was very comfortable and quiet, which was surprising considering its location. Also had drinks in the saloon and then headed out to find a nice restaurant. Could not find anything worthwhile in the immediate area, so... More

The history around the Strater should be more than enough to convince one to stay there. If not, here's a few extra details. It was a great stay, can't say we saw any ghosts, but for the price, it was actually cheaper than most other places in Durango. Rooms were super clean, it's right smack in the middle of downtown,... Stayed here for a couple of days in September while in Durango for business. The location is great and the hotel itself is very comfortable and clean. Staff was very friendly and breakfast was good.

Go here - so good. The staff are really really nice. There's a great bar for cocktails, an excellent restaurant and you can wind up the evening in the saloon bar. The steam railway is just a short walk away but if time is short you can see the train off in morning (great photo opportunity) and then drive up... More

Overall, I have nothing but rave reviews for the Strater. It is a really gorgeous and fun hotel. You will be surrounded by wonderful antiques in lovely and comfortable rooms with air conditioning and elevators. The decor of the rooms is stunning and everything you hope for in a special hotel experience. The saloon is the best part of the... More

The Strater continues to shine. We have stayed here a few times now, and are never disappointed. The rooms are in excellent condition, comfortable beds, with all the modern conveniences in a historic, well kept, and well located hotel. It isn't cheap, but it worth it. If you want luxury at a fair price in Durango, stay here.

Don't stay anywhere else, the Strater is the place to stay in Durango. We loved our Victorian decorated room, feeling like we were living in the era. A visit to the Saloon downstairs is a must with ragtime music being played and of course the "shoot-out" taking place inside and going to the street. Louis A'Mour wrote many of his... More

This historic hotel embodies all that a booming western mining hotel was. This is an elegant, family-friendly hotel. We stayed in the governo's suite and it oozed Victorian charm. The restaurants in the hotel served some of the best food we got in town. We highly recommend the melodrama for an evening of laughs for an entire evening.
