The Strater is a beautiful hotel. All of the antiques give the hotel and rooms a warm comfortable feeling. The beds are comfortable and the hotel is quiet. My husband and I stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed everything about this historic hotel. The hotel is within walking distance to the train depot. The hotel also has a private hot... More

Stayed in a few Historic Hotels that were just old and not so great to stay in. This Hotel is old but it's well maintained and functions at above average to good as a moderate priced Hotel. Rooms are large and decorated with taste. Bed was comfortable. TV/Cable good. Parking fair. Location to downtown action/shopping is great! If you like... More

The Strater Hotel in downtown Durango is one of the rare properties these days that is exactly as it is advertised. The pictures aren't enhanced to make things look different than they really are. Just a very, very nice property. The location is perfect for exploring Durango and the surrounding areas. The hotel restaurant, the Mahogany Grille, is outstanding. Breakfast... More

We stayed at the Strater for a short family vacation. I liked that they had a Queen bed and a twin bed in the same room, perfect for our family. I also liked the old furnishings. However, our room was quite dusty. Perhps it is difficult to keep the dust managed when the hotel is right next to the railroad,... More

The Strater is 120 years old and this makes for benefits and a few negatives. First of all it is in the most perfect location for checking out Durango. Right on the main street close to all the restaurants, shops, and the famous train. The first room we were taken to had only a full size bed...not ideal for my... More

This is an historic charming downtown hotel in lovely Durango. The setting is as you would expect it to have looked in the late 1800's, but upgraded. All you need to do is step outside and you are close to the train station, shopping and restaurants. The rooms are very small, but full of antiques and old fashioned wallpaper that... More

We stayed at the Strater Hotel for one night of our 9 day tour of the area. The train ride from Silverton to Durango and the night at the hotel was the best part. I loved the history of the place and the town itself. The resturant was first class and the Diamond Belle Saloon was a kick!!

We stayed two nights on business and pleasure and loved this place! The hotel staff went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The room was full of antiques, wood finish and Old West ambience. We would stay here again in a heartbeat if we are in the area again. Highly recommend it!

We agree with the other reviews of the Strater - it's a well-run operation located on the main street of an entertaining, tourist-oriented town. The post-renovation decor is a great Victorian throw-back with lots of nice touches from fancy wall coverings to woodwork. Instead of modernizing, they've gone historic. The public areas have a decidedly gold rush feel. Rooms vary... More

This was the most beautiful hotel I have ever seen. Every room was furnished with Victorian furniture and the hotel staff went out of their way to assist you. You'll love it.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Built in 1887, The historic Strater Hotel is a prominent downtown Durango, Colorado landmark located two blocks north of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Cleveland pharmacist, Henry Strater, believed Durango would thrive, and with its prosperity, it would need a grand hotel. The Strater Hotel opened after an expenditure of $70,000 and placement of 376,000 native red bricks and hand-carved sandstone cornices and sills. As the hotel evolved, it became a popular winter retreat for Durango town folk who would close their own homes during the cold months and move into the hotel. Currently, the Strater Hotel houses the world’s largest collection of American Victorian Antiques, many of which decorate its 93 guestrooms including its Louis L’Amour Room—designated Literary Landmark. The Strater Hotel is home to the Durango Melodrama & Vaudeville, Henry Strater Theatre, Diamond Belle Saloon, Mahogany Grille, Strater Catering and Events, and The Office Spiritorium. ... more   less
