We stayed at the Strater for 4 nights during a week long trip to Southwest Colorado. We had one of the deluxe queen rooms on the third floor. The room was very clean, the decor was lovely and the bed was comfortable as well. As someone else noted, the plumbing was a little bit loud and the sounds of the... More

Stepping into the Strater Hotel is like walking back in time. It is very well kept, considering it is over 100 years old. It is very clean. The staff is friendly & helpful. The food in the Mahogany Grille is supurb. The entertainment in the Diamond Belle Saloon was outstanding. The deluxe continental breakfast was a nice touch. The Strater... More

We didn't have a bad experience with the Strater Hotel, but for the price and from the website, I expected something a bit better. The rooms were quite small, though the Victorian flavor was pleasant. The staff is friendly. The plumbing is very loud, and there was some "other room" noise. The location is very good, and they had some... More

My wife and I really enjoy our stay at the Stater Hotel. It's location is great, we could walk to everywhere we wanted to go. The breakfast was very nice, my wife went every morning. The only draw back was, no coffee maker in the room. But we enjoyed it so much we are going back and taking our friends.

The rooms are quite comfortable with all the modern amenities. But it is the elegant Victorian ambiance that makes it fun. The Diamond Belle Saloon off the lobby is a lively evening diversion. You can't beat the location in the heart of the downtown, an easy stroll to the Durango-Silverton Railroad, galleries, shopping and great restaurants. The only downside is... More

We have stayed at the Strater many times all different times of the year. Although we usually stay with out son and his wife when we travel alone from southern N J to Durango, we always choose the Strater when we are bring friends or relatives with us. We like the antiques in this hotel and we like the entertainment... More

The hotel is charming and nice to visit, but the service is not what you would expect from a four star hotel. We stayed in room 223 and all we heard all night was noise and party goers shouts and screams from 10pm to around 2 or 3am. We had to go home to relax from our vacation. When we... More

The Strater is charming hotel with a friendly staff and antique furniture. The wall paper is starting to peel around some of the edges and one of the chairs in our room was a bit wobbly, but it’s hard to beat the location, price and piano music from one of the connecting restaurants.

according to expectations: old west style hotel, appreciated when you are coming from Europe. Bathroom could be refresh but clean, if small. Convenient location on main avenue so you can stroll around without having to drive to visit or eat in the old town. Friendly staff. Indeed you are to park a block away which isnt the end of the... What a lovely historic hotel. The location is absolutely perfect - right in the center of town. The rooms were small as expected in a historic hotel, but very nice and clean. The staff was very professional and pleasant. The included continental breakfast was very good and generous. We went to the bar one night and was greatly entertained by... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Built in 1887, The historic Strater Hotel is a prominent downtown Durango, Colorado landmark located two blocks north of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Cleveland pharmacist, Henry Strater, believed Durango would thrive, and with its prosperity, it would need a grand hotel. The Strater Hotel opened after an expenditure of $70,000 and placement of 376,000 native red bricks and hand-carved sandstone cornices and sills. As the hotel evolved, it became a popular winter retreat for Durango town folk who would close their own homes during the cold months and move into the hotel. Currently, the Strater Hotel houses the world’s largest collection of American Victorian Antiques, many of which decorate its 93 guestrooms including its Louis L’Amour Room—designated Literary Landmark. The Strater Hotel is home to the Durango Melodrama & Vaudeville, Henry Strater Theatre, Diamond Belle Saloon, Mahogany Grille, Strater Catering and Events, and The Office Spiritorium. ... more   less
