If you want 5 star Luxury, stay next door at the Lowes. If you want character, stay here. Hotel California is made up of separate bungalows with separate rooms. I was in #7 and was very comfortable. I don't think any of the rooms have views of the ocean but a walk through the nice courtyard, down a flight of... More

Peeling paint, bugs in the bathtub, the alley next door where cars drive by throughout the day and night, no kitchen in hotel, spotty to no wifi, safe with no key provided, smelly room. I would avoid staying here at all cost.

James , manager and Victor were both great. Great value for location a block from Santa Monica pier. Surf decor Don't miss Chez Jay restaurant right across street. Wonderfully comfortable bed. Not to miss

We picked this hotel because its price was a bit less than all the other hotels near the location. The rooms need refurbishing, but it is also the design of the hotel, made as a place for surfers to live (thus a kitchen in some rooms). The breakfast is from 7 to 9 and it is only a bagel and... NetFreak, You are definitely right about our perfect location! While our cool, beachy style may not be for you, all of our other guests love our vibe! There are plenty of posh, corporate hotels in Santa Monica, which may suit you better on your next visit. However, be prepared to spend a few hundred dollars more at those places, NOT... More

Definitely a different type of hotel than we are used to. With that being said, it was well worth giving it a try. The place is right on the beach and very quirky. Could use some TLC,but James at the reception really made our stay a great one. He was so warm and personable to our family. He even gave... More

Not a five star resort, but really good location and price. Walked in here and got a room for about $150 less than the other hotels we were looking at. Parking was a little tight and we had to leave our keys with the front desk. James gave us amazing service and really made the difference.

My trip was a mix of business and pleasure and it was perfect to stay somewhere slightly outside of the LA craziness and right on the beach - it only took us 20 minutes to get there from the airport which was amazing considering the reputation of LA-area traffic. We had a suite and it had the home-y feel of... More

Be advised that this is an older property with all that entails. Sockets are at a premium and internet is flakey at best. The parking is a whole other story...... Suffice to say that I am glad we didn't have a large car and got here early. All that aside it was exactly what I hoped for. Our bed was... More

We selected this hotel because we were on vacation and wanted a place with local, beach town flavor--and this was the perfect place! If you want an ultramodern facility with air conditioning, a pool, and elevators, stay somewhere else. But if you want the authentic Southern California laid-back, beach/surf atmosphere experience, then this is the place! Quaint, friendly, and relaxing.... More

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
