If you are for slick new properties with no personality, the Cal Mar is not for you. The Cal Mar has retained its original LA '50's-early '60's character with a kidney bean shaped pool that all the units look onto and an unstudied beach life ambiance. This place has character. It's not super Fancy but has lots of space for... More

The location of this hotel was great. Very short walk to all local attractions. Parking is available on site for a few $ less per day than most lots we saw in the area. The rooms are huge! I would recommend asking for a room on the top floor. The hotel is definitely older and the floors creek. We could... More

We stayed one night at Cal Mar, The location is great, we were not overly keen on Santa Monica compared to the excellent Santa Barbara, but we needed a place close to LAX and didn't want to spend too much. The lady on reception was really friendly and happy to give help and advice. Basically accommodation is not cheap in... More

The only good thing I can say about this pace is that the staff were very friendly. The whole place feels like a 70's motel. Room was OK'ish, but basic. Old style CRT TV's, no shower curtain, dated furniture. Not really worth the price, but the all hotels in Santa Monica are expensive. The location is fine and warrants the... More

Recently stayed here and let me tell you, it was GREAT! Front desk staff was very friendly and informed me of all the local spots to visit. The location is the best in Santa Monica, it's near the beach and 3rd Steet Promenade(Main Shopping Attraction). The bed was very comfortable and the room had a FULL BLOWN KITCHEN. Got lazy... More

The location of the suites is wonderful, a short walk to the coast and a short block to the Third St pedestrian mall. The staff are wonderful. Parking was excellent. Paid Internet was good. The first time we stayed here a couple of years ago we had no problem with noise from other patrons, however this time we had people... More

The location of this hotel was really great. Walking distance from the beach, pier, and the shops on 3rd street. The room was clean but it needs to be updated. The courtyard and pool are really cute and the pool is heated which is a plus. Rooms a loud because the walls are thin so you hear the traffic and... More

trash pick up in ally everyday at 6am. Bums rummaging thru dumpsters in the middle of the night, foul mouthed people screaming outside at each other and 6.4 black guys blocking the parking spaces. I thought I was in downtown Kandahar or somewhere in Iraq. The carpets are threadbare, beat up rusty furniture, even chewed up front door, not enough... More

Great location but noise is awful! I swear the garbage is picked up every morning at 7am! The owners need to invest in the place and replace the 1950's windows. Ear plugs are seriously necessary. Linens a little funky too. Pool is nice and rooms are big. I've stayed a couple times but will try another place on my next... More

Best deal around if you want to be near the water or near the Promenade in Santa Monica. I truly appreciate the fact that the owners have kept the Mid-Century classic motel character of this property down to the original pastel tile in the bath. My room was huge! And, the kitchenette coupled with the fact that the property is... More

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
