Judging by the reviews, I got very lucky when I walked in off the street and got a room for $89 (in December) with nothing worse than a little grime and filth. The hotel next door wanted $175. With this in mind, I was actually pleased with my stay and willing to overlook multiple problems. Staff polite and helpful. Room... More

The location of this hotel is wonderful. It is across from the beach and near the pier, however there is only 1 room with a good view, which we had but the view was obstructed by the hotels ugly deck. We booked a king room with a jacuzzi tub on the top fllor with ocean view. Check in time is... More

Our hotel stay was awful!!!!Our hotel room did not have a working air conditioner. The weekend we staid in Santa Barbara was very hot, every time we left the room and came back it was hotter in the room than outside. Instead of an air conditioner, they had a small mini fan that did not cool down the room at... More

Overpriced, shabby, noisy. Long-suffering staff tries to overcome problems caused by owner and poor management.

Not the best, bot not as bad as some of the reviews. Our room was clean enough, the location was excellent and i wouldn't rule out staying here again.

Here were the best things about my stay at the Ala Mar: drinking wine and eating snacks on the upper deck overlooking the beach, being allowed to wander over to the Villa Rosa for a dip in their hot tub (they're affiliated properties), and location. Location is key. It was a block or two away from State Street, and just... More

Clean room, comfortable bed, helpful staff. We did have some problems with noise, both from people in next door rooms as the walls are very thin, but also with the trains. The railway runs right through the centre of the town and the drivers sound their horn almost continually as they travel through the town, even when it's 3am, although... More

Ew. What a dump. It's deceiving- the motel looks nice from the outside with plants and wicker furniture but our room was dark, dingy, and dirty. The furniture looks like it's 30+ years old; we couldn't even find a switch for the ceiling fan but I'm sure it would have made an imbalanced"wocka-wocka-wocka" sound anyway; needs a paint job; bathroom... I only wish I had read the reviews here before booking this hotel. I work in the travel business and would normally prebook all of my hotels having researched them first. However I wanted a free and easy tour of southern California and decied not to prebook this time. So when I arrived in Santa Barbara, this hotel right across... More
