We stayed here in cool weather and I don't know that I'd book this place in the summer - no air conditioning, only a ceiling fan. The room was very small and the stall shower (no tub) very tiny. My husband and I wondered how overweight people would manage that shower. The office only opens at 2 PM so you... More

This is a family run hotel and the owners have created something to be proud of. Right on Hwy.101 south of the famous State of California landmark. The owners have a discount dining arrangement with the Cavelier Restaurant next door. The room was immaculate and very comfortably appointed.

A classic overnighter for anyone visiting Hearst Castle. Located amongst the lineup of low-cost motels, just five mins from the Castle entrance. Check in was friendly. The room was well equipped and clean, showing signs of wear and tear. Bed was comfortable. Limited food options nearby, which is surprising given the number of motels.

We stayed along with other family members overnight in two rooms. On the positive side the rooms were well presented and the beds were comfortable and a light breakfast was provided. On the negative side our air conditioning didn't work making the room quite stuffy, there was no key for the door deadlock also the shower rose was at about... More

Perfectly adequate motel, nothing to differentiate it from many others. Good location, if like us you were planning on visiting Hearst castle on the drive through the Big Sur. Could do with checking the cleaning staff - we found a childs shoe left under the bed from a previous occupant.

We found this little resort by accident and were glad we did. For $79 it's perfect. The room was clean but the ocean front fireplaces and seating was outstanding. A fire burning while the sun set slowly over the pacific was almost surreal, groups of unfamiliar people gathered and enjoying the same shared experience. Wonderful.

Budget motel which is clean but sparse. The bathroom is good size, but the shower stall is small. No amenities at hotel. No ocean view but you can hear the ocean at night.. No air conditioning but does have a ceiling fan. Did have a refrigerator, but it was loud as it cycled on and off. No elevator. Hotel was... More

After not booking a room ahead of time, we discovered that the Sands by the Sea was one of the few lower priced hotels that still had vacancy in the area. Main attraction for us was that it sets right on the beach, We were little nervous when we first pulled up, but was pleasantly surprised when we checked out... More

This was the half way point of our trip up the coast from San Diego to San Francisco. Staying in a little seaside motel like this was on the list of things to do and I don't think we could have picked a better one. Very friendly man working the desk when we checked in, was very helpful. San Simeon... More

My husband and I stayed here over Labor Day weekend. The Sands by the Sea was one of the lower priced hotels we found that still had vacancy. I was a little nervous when we pulled up, as this is an older hotel, but we were pleasantly surprised. The rooms were well maintained and the location is great. About 5... More
