Wow! Definitely recommend this wonderful hostel you are simply blown away by it's location. We saw grey whales migrating and seals too. Yes there signs warning about water but take bottled! Room for 3 was giant bunk bed, not single& double. Hot tub under stars a treat

Dear Ele, Thank you for the kind review! We are so glad you had a great experience! There is nothing better than sitting in the hot tub on the cliff edge and watching the stars while the lighthouse beams rotate over the coast! The good news is: The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) - Santa Clara District Drinking Water... More

The well is too close to the septic field. Although bottled water is provided, beware. Just taking a shower made a person in my group get a really wonky gut. It was old and dingy, but relatively clean and the location is amazing. It is a few miles away from stores and restaurants, so bring your own food and use... More

Dear Traveling Sandy, Thank you for vising HI Pigeon Point Lighthouse. For everyone's information the water is not close or even connected to our septic system. The well has been shut off since 2013. We truck in sanitized water from Santa Cruz municipal and then we treat it again by a paid professional who tests the water and sends it... More

Pigeon Point Lighthouse has something for visitors of all ages. Simply Gorgeous views. Full of history. The beautiful old lighthouse and sealife. While I was there , I found out that there is a connection to my home state of North Carolina. I walked along highway 1 and met other photographers, others that were just enjoying the sights. There are... More

This hostel has been on my list for a while. I got to stay for a night during a meandering long weekend drive from SF to Monterrey. Before I even checked in I got to see harbor seals, dolphins and breeching whales! Holy Cow! The hostel is made up a few outbuildings on a bluff next to the Pigeon Point... More

Easy on the budget and definitely a hostel. Good value for the accommodations. That said, this part of the coast is amazing! Do yourself a favor a bring some firewood to sit outside (in warm clothing!) and watch the stars. Also, wake up to sunrise ... stunning here. Took off a star because the actual lighthouse is in such disrepair.

Thank you Terry! The actual lighthouse tower is in disrepair and is owned and managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. They are working with the California State Park Foundation to raise funds to repair the tower and open it up to the public again. Hostelling International supports their efforts. I have wanted to stay at one of the 2 San Mateo Coast Lighthouse Hostels for over 30 years. We just completed a one night stay at the Pigeon Point hostel and it exceeded expectations. We were in a private room that had a 'houston bed' - double bed on bottom with a top single bunk. The mattress was comfortable,... More

My wife and I visited the California coast last fall and decided to stay in hostels as we traveled from San Francisco down to Morrow Bay. While all our hostel stays were very good, Pigeon Point was the most picturesque. So much so that we have even noticed it in at least one television commercial for a pharmaceutical product. This... We at one time stayed on the higher ground above and overlooking the lighthouse at a rental series of attached apartment units. Since sold, now one has to stay at the hostel or in town at Pescadero or expensive Costanoa further down the road! Clean, safe. Beautiful views! Tremendous photo opportunities! Whales, fog, flowers, cliffs! Plenty of beauty!....where my heart... More

A friend of mine and I stumbled upon this place while driving up Highway 1 and booked a room for the next week. Close to some great hiking in Big Basin, not far from either Santa Cruz or San Francisco. The staff was charming and sweet and everyone we met were very sweet and fun to be around. We checked... We made a reservation in December for two nights in one of Pigeon Point's private rooms for August. The room was great-- very comfortable bed, enough room for a pack-and-play for our son. The hostel staff was welcoming and warm at check-in and throughout the weekend. There are four residential buildings. Three have a kitchen and one shares the kitchen... More
