Very much enjoyed staying at this very clean, fairly old fashioned hotel. The bathrooms and showers are "down the hall" which would normally have been a non-starter for me, but I am really glad that the folks I was traveling with had already made the reservations. My room was very clean, had a new mattress, had good ventilation and a... More

We stayed here for Stanford reunion weekend in October, and opted for a room with a private bathroom. The Cardinal Hotel doesn't have a lot of frills, but the location is outstanding. It is right in downtown Palo Alto, within walking distance of bars, restaurants, entertainment, CalTrain and the Marguerite Shuttle to Stanford. It is also a relatively good value,... More

This hotel in the heart of Palo Alto is great for walking around town but the lack of suitable parking detracts as does the noise from the street during the night. The hotel is clean but the staff were quite off hand. The room has all the necessary amenities but I think they could improve their customer service and do... More

This was a week long business trip to attend a training at Stanford University. The Cardinal Hotel was great! Excellent location to walkable stores and eateries! The Caltrain Station is just a little less than a 5 minute walk away to catch the Shuttle to Standford or the Train to site see in San Francisco. Housekeeping kept my room very... More

My second child to attend Stanford university is now in her senior year. My first Stanford child attended from 2007-2011, and this second one started as soon as the first one left, to attend 2011 through June 2014. During this seven year span, our family has almost only ever stayed at the Cardinal Hotel when we visit our children. (We... More

Beautiful old hotel in the middle of downtown Palo Alto. Clean and comfortable and a welcome departure from today's cookie-cutter style hotels. There is no air conditioning, but there is a ceiling fan that keeps things cool and large windows that open. Yes, the street noise can be loud. But, remember, this is a hotel in the middle of the... The Cardinal is old but lovingly maintained. The comfortable, dignified lobby still boasts a writing desk (more of a display piece than something anyone uses) of the sort that all hotels used to have in their lobbies for guests to write letters and postcards way back in the 20th century. There is wi-fi now, of course, and it is free,... More

Right in the middle of Silicon Valley's heart is Palo Alto's Cardinal Hotel. You would think that in this high tech mecca the downtown hotels would all be super modern, but this 1920s vintage building is a real gem. It's retain it's art deco style. What a breath of fresh air compared to all the chains sweeping America. Reasonable prices... More

Amazing refurbished rooms: super bed and pillows, very clean, hi-tech fan, Samsung LCD TV, even the desk chair is height-adjustable. Shared bathrooms spotless and always free. Staff friendly enough. Super location. In many ways, the best (independent) hotel I have stayed at for ages. However.... street noise at weekends is significant, and alleys all round means dumpster activity high.

The best thing about this place is that it is near the Stanford campus and in "downtown" Palo Alto. Prices were also good. Unknowingly, I booked a room with a shared bath (down the hall and around the corner), which was okay but maybe too much like campus. Things were a little frayed, and the place generally looked like it... More
