We spent several days staying in the heart of SF and had a great time, but the highlight of our trip was relaxing at Asilomar. Based on reviews, we were slightly hesitant, but are glad we took the risk. First of all, we had 5 people with us and were able to stay in one room (1 queen bed and... more

Make no mistake, this is a retreat (NOT a resort) for conferences. We stayed in a cabin-style room with 2 double beds and a working wood burning fireplace. The bathroom was not just dated, but dirty. The floor tiles made me cringe, and the industrial fittings were purely functional and lent no ambience. The shower stall was tiny, the shower... more

Asilomar is a place you love or hate! - No inbetween! Multiple loging units are scattered across dozens of acres of natural landscape. This includes parking structures, buried underground with a native grass landscape on top. In fact, everything is native - no lawns, gardens, or anyhig else but natural beauty, with boardwalks traveling over native sand dunes (and native... more

this is the place to stay. As long as y ou don't mind staying in what appears to be a former YMCA camp. It is in an excellent location but the amenities are few and again camp like. Not at all what I expected. My husband and I decided not to stay and they kindly refunded our deposit and didn't... more

I have stayed at Asilomar since the early 1980's and absolutely love the setting and some of the rooms and suites BUT the dining room must have been managed by convicts on parole with comparable grub. Even the breakfast was horrible and it take darn hard work to mess up breakfast. The lunches were even worse. I had better food... more

Yes, yes, the setting is spectacular, and yes, yes, Julia Morgan's Arts&Crafts historic buildings are stunning...but my God, stay in one of those miniature rooms designed for girl scouts in the early 20th century and you'll have a mental breakdown, I swear. Two people can barely move in there. In addition, the food - if you can call it that... more

This is a great place to decompress and get away from TV and the Internet. My wife, 8-year-old daughter, and I stayed at Asilomar for three days and nights over New Year's, using it as a base to see the nearby Monterey and Carmel. This is a rustic, comfortable, inexpensive -- not luxurious -- oceanfront retreat owned by the state... more

We managed to squeeze in here for a one-night stay during a 2-night minimum weekend....call the front desk directly if you can't do so on the reservation number. We've stayed here many times so instead of listing pro/cons I'll simply give you my tips to experience the best of Asilomar. 1. Request a historic room(Julia Morgan designed buildings) or in... more

This is a 1960s old and over-priced property. Absolutely no TV/phone/etc in the rooms -- this can be a feature until the bathroom ceiling starts to leak and the electrics go out as a result and you cannot call anyone and the reception is at a 1/2 mile cold walk away. In a total of 5 days being here the... more

For all the years that Asilomar was a great getaway, conference facility, it is now on a steep decline. From the start on arrival, the staff at the registration counter was rude and treated guests as people to be dealt with, not customers to be served. A group of us stayed in one of the houses. There was no heat... more
