We just returned from a road trip to Lassen Volcanic, staying at the Red Castle Inn in Nevada City going and returning to keep our daily drive time down to 3 hours. If you like historic buildings, please go. But know that there will be so much clutter you wont' be able to see to tops of anything. Relics, book and stuffed animals everywhere. My husband and I have stayed at the Red Castle on many occasions since the early 1980s. I've lost count but think we have lodged there at least 20-25 times. Great location, very good breakfast, charming hosts. Shared the adorable two bedroom garret suite with a friend and it was very nice and comfortable. It was an easy walk to downtown Nevada City. Mary Louise and Conley were very accommodating. It's a lovely old historic inn.

This historic building sits in the heart of Nevada City. Each room is lavishly decorated with antiques. The decor is truly outstanding. But, and this is the deal breaker, the hosts treat their guests like annoying unwelcome visitors. I have never, repeat never, experienced such odd behavior by B&B hosts.

Ok, who cares that it's haunted? I slept like a baby, and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The nice thing about old houses is they're infused with character. The walls practically ooze with history.
