Read all the other reviews and trust us. "I'd rather sleep in the Car" & "Pot smokers...everywhere" and "Needs MAJOR refurbishing" pretty much wraps up this night for me, too. If I had a car, it would had been a better choice but was stranded without a ride out of town. Smelly, nasty hallways with rumbled old, tattered carpeting throughout... More

We visited the day after Christmas. After we checked in, we headed to our room to put away our luggage. Our room was quite small, which was not a shock for an historic hotel, but also quite filthy. The tracks for the sliding glass door on the bathtub were absolutely black with mold. The bathtub itself was dirty and rust... More

Inspired by the Hallmark movie "The Christmas Card" I accompanied my sister on a trip to Nevada City. Thinking it would be quaint to stay in the historic hotel my sister booked at the National Hotel and take in the Victorian Christmas event. The lobby was quaint and inviting until we climbed up the creaky stairs. We noticed peeling stained... More

The only good thing I can say about this hotel is its location. It is beyond rundown. The bed in our room was as comfortable as sleeping on a hard floor, the sheets had been torn and stitched up, the light on my side of the bed wouldn't stay on, and the wallpaper was pealing off the wall.

I don't consider myself picky and have no problem in a cheaper hotel. But this was the worst place we have ever stayed. Historic is not the word!! Old, smelly, rusted pipes, old mattresses, etc. so sad because Nevada City is the best little town to visit and this hotel should be totally the place to be. Years of lack... More

Summary: built in the 1800's, bathrooms added in the 1970's. No other work done, ever. I had two nights in the very charming town of Nevada City, so booked the in-town National Hotel. The good part of a hotel so run down and scary is that all I did was sleep there, so that left lots of time to explore... More

This is not quirky, it's not "a little musty", it is falling down and decaying. It's a crime that such a beautiful, historical place is being allowed to degrade like this. The carpets are filthy and buckled, the ceilings and walls are leaking everywhere, what could be beautiful old chandeliers are missing multiple crystals, filthy, and have ugly flourescent bulbs... The location is great - staff was nice enough, and I was able to sleep o.k & am still able to review it OK for a night, Hotel Impossible I am sure could come up with many ideas to improve - a little musty, carpets very old - sink was clogged & kind of gross, no cold water at the... More

Good prices. Hotel dates from the late 1800's. Nice room, tall bed, fireplace. Whirlpool tub, but very small. No elevator, depending on which entrance you use, lots of stairs. Right on the start of Old Town. Lots of shops and restaurants in walking distance.

If you like quirky, funky hotels with lots if historic charm this is the place for you. We loved having drinks on the enormous balcony that overlooks all of historic dowtown Nevada City. It's a bit run down in spots but if you dont mind a little adventure it could be a lot of fun.
