What a beautiful park! My husband and I are in our 30s and were on a road trip from San Diego to San Francisco-- I hadn't been to Montana de Oro since I was a child and he has never been, but I knew it would be perfect to camp there for a couple of nights. One of the highlights... More

We were staying in SLO and decided to see this location. It is a beautiful drive over. We did drive around and saw several trails you could go on. A few horse back riders were also on the trails. We walked to the beach which is right there from the parking lot. It was a rocky beach. Make sure to... More

A beautiful park right along the coast. If you're in the area, you won't be disappointed if you stop here for a while. Even if you don't feel like getting out for a hike, driving through the park is a treat. But - if you are in mood for a hike, there are SO many trails to chose from! My... More

We mark it average and not excellent, because of the tar problem on the beach. We have chemically sensitive people in our party, and they got quite ill from the strong tar smell. It was so bad, that it stunk up the car! The stuff would not wash out with soap and water, and had to be scrubbed off with... More

How lucky we are to live in the United States, which values it's wild and open spaces, and in California which has such remarkable wilderness opportunities and has, over the years, taken steps to preserve them. Montana de Oro State Park was created in 1965, and we would like to thank whoever had the foresight to purchase this remarkable property... More

Montana De Oro was the jewel among California's state Parks. The Bluff Trail meandered along a lovely stretch of coast. It was an easy, beginner trail. To my horror it was completely erased–replaced by a wide, aggregate paved road. No longer a pleasant hike, this beautiful coastline has been "made more accessible." Gone are the egrets and shore birds along... More

I'm almost hesitant to review it b/c i kind of want to keep it a secret. The campground was really nice with a decent distance between most sites. It also had a big knoll in the middle, so you weren't surrounded by 5 sites, but really only 2. We also stayed at one of the environmental sites, which was spectacular.

On a recent family reunion to the area the park became a focal point of several daily excursions. On our first trip we walked the bluffs trail but the fog rolled in off the Pacific so the views were somewhat hidden. When we visited a couple of days later we had brilliant sunshine and the views were spectacular. If you... More

We spent one night at Environmental Site 3 in the park. It was an amazing location to camp. It's a steep but short walk up to this site, but you end up at an isolated spot upon a bluff overlooking the ocean that simply can't be beat. There's also a composting toilet and picnic table. It was also great that... More

We have been camping here twice and love it here. It is very quiet, not a "partying" campground. We like to camp in the first loop because it is closer to walk to the coves. Pick sites on the outer edge of the loop. The campground host gave my kids a little "exploring packet". Take the bluff hike and spend... More
