This hotel is one of those gems with character. The property was built a very long time ago and has been updated to current standards. Yes, the room are small with limited space. Everything was carefully planned to utilize available space as efficiently as possible. The rooms had storage under the bed for placement of the suitcases and drawers for... More

Got the Varden on Priceline because it was three stars and slept two. Room was a walk up to third floor and was no bigger than 9 by 8 feet. Bed was a full size in a corner. Closet had been converted into a toilet and shower with the actual closet being a rod suspended in the room with a... More

This is the 2nd time we've stayed here. It's an easy walk to the Terrace Theater. Larry is the BEST host. Wow, can't say enough good about this cute old hotel. Larry has brought it to life again. Rooms are very small but the ambiance makes up for it. Two Keureg machines in the little lobby for your enjoyment all... More

I was just in Long Beach to visit with my family. The Varden was certainly the choice due to location and price. The rooms were small from pictures but they looked tidy. I arrive on a January day to a small room and a lovely staff who greeted me. It is important to understand that the rooms are small and amazingly... More

These rooms are small, that's the savings. You will receive personal attention and the highest standard of service possible including incredibly clean rooms. Larry and Shaun were the best, I recommend this to any single person stay or an adventurous couple who wants a nice boutique hotel near all the good places in Long Beach. ............................................

First time traveling to Long Beach (on business) and wanted a boutique hotel. Traveling on a government budget, the Varden Hotel fit within the federal rate and could not have been a better choice. A perfectly charming 35 room European-style boutique hotel - a clean, well-lit stylish place with a top drawer staff. A historic sign advertising the Dolly Varden... More

We stayed here for one night to attend a wedding. Check-in was fairly smooth. We were "upgraded" to the 3rd floor, but the only difference seemed to be that there was more light coming into the room, our room still faced the wall of another building. There is no elevator so we had to climb a few flights of stairs,... More

The location of this hotel is unique insofar that it is not surrounded by other hotels/restaurants. Located on the perimeter of the "heart" of The Downtown area, the hotel is blocks away from other restaurants, shopping, etc. It has a parking lot for those who drive. For those who use public transit, you're one block from the Blue Line, a... More

When looking for a hotel for two nights in Long Beach, I saw that the Varden was the highest rated hotel (in TripAdvisor). So I read the reviews. And then decided to "take a chance" that the reviewers were right in what they were saying. Indeed they were. The staff is extremely well trained which shows in all that they... More

My husband and I went to Long Beach for a wedding over Labor Day weekend. After reading the great reviews, and the price being right at $119 per night, we decided to stay at the Varden. The Pros: - Amazing staff, the front desk was manned for 24 hours, they were super helpful, offered help with bags, and complimentary water... More
