I really loved the one night I spent at The Varden. It reminded me of a place my wife and I enjoyed in Montreal last year -- European, clean, modern. I spend many nights a year on business, often staying in Courtyard by Marriott or simiar level accomodations. They are predictable, comfortable, but rarely exciting. The Varden is wonderful, almost... more

While looking for some reasonable hotel in the larger LA area, I stumbled across the Varden. The reviews here on trip advisor were excellent so I went ahead and booked. And man, am I glad I did it. We arrived here after some 6 hours of driving and passing the rush hour on LA highways with an almost flat tire... more

We stayed one night prior to going over to Catalina Island. When we arrived, we were greeted by Angela who was very helpful and offered us some wine and snacks that they were serving. The wine was a cut above the usual free fare. The hotel is a historic gem located in a recovering area of downtown Long Beach. As... more

This hotel was just blocks away from where we were attending a conference and the rates were good. I would agree that the rooms are not arranged for business travelers; the desk is a bit small and the clothes area is tiny. The area is a bit dodgie-looking, but I felt safe walking to and from the conference. However; the... more

We stayed at the Varden while attending a conference at another hotel. What a delightful hotel! Charles and the front desk staff never failed to welcome me as I came in the door, and always offered water or coffee. It felt like Bed & Breakfast hospitality. The room was so clean that I was embarrassed to put my shabby suitcase... more

The renovation of this 1920's hotel has been carefully and lovingly executed by our host, Larry. He has caressed every detail and we "felt the love". The rooms are clean, crisp and comfy, not to mention the beds are luxurious. The staff could not have been more helpful, everything from the tour, to hello's, to boarding passes. My only concern... more

The owner of this wonderful little gem of a hotel truly loves what he's doing in downtown Long Beach and wants you to also! I've never felt so cared for while staying in a hotel. Everything was perfect ... from check-in by friendly staff to the immaculate and well thought out room. Larry, the owner, was there to help with... more

This is a great hotel for a long weekend in Long Beach. The Varden is a meticulously renovated Historic Hotel. The design, staff and small touches is what makes it a MUST Stay while in Long Beach. The owners and staff are very knowledgeable of the area and are warm and welcoming. Services such as wine tasting in the evening,... more

My room at The Varden was perfect for travel as a single person. My hosts made me feel very comfortable and very much at home. The owners have taken great care in their rennovation, selecting furnishings and decor for comfort, utility and style. The continental breakfast was simple, but once again carefully planned and perfect. I would highly recommend The... more
