My wife and I stayed here one night in summer when we booked an open trip to Karuizawa/Nikko with no set plans for a few days outside of Tokyo on our vacation. Though we went sightseeing most of the day we had a hard time reserving online ryokans or pensions without easily available wifi in the area and ended up seeing many unused cabins and cottages without any contact info. The owners/couple that run this place took us in on short notice immediately and were helpful; it is behind a large pet place on the left and opposite of the Paradise American memorabilia store exactly 1km north of the JR shinkansen station on the main street. The sign says Kyukaru Pension Uehara in red and can be hard to see from the street. There is a posted nonsmoking sign and upon first impression is a bit outdated but clean and tidy. The whole place has about 8-10 rooms and the shared toilets and bathrooms were quaint and also clean with provided soap/shampoo. The rooms upstairs (2F) are just like the photos show, spartan and basic but comfy with in-room AC/heat (plus heated floors for winter!?), free wifi, and decent beds. Towels are rented, and the charges/prices are per person, not per room. Still much cheaper than the local resort hotels but did just what we needed to shower, recharge, and rest up for the early shinkansen. Just to note, the showers are locked from 2300-0630 every night, same as the main entrance door since the owners sleep on-site. Also, the few rooms on the first floor get a lot more foot traffic from the upstairs people and owners since the shared toilets/showers are on the first floor - though with the majority of people staying were native Tokyoites it was still very quiet. We arrived too late to opt for the dinner and breakfast so we cant comment on that. Overall good, clean place to stay.…

Uehara Pension is not far away from Karuizawa JR Station, just 15 minutes walk, my wife and I was the first time visiting Karuizawa. Just get out from the north exit and walk straight ahead from the main street and you can easily find Uehara Pension on your left hand side. Like other ryokan in Japan, Uehara Pension is simple, clean and with all quiet environment. We booked a room with private bath and toilet, spacious and roomy, but all that simply, just bed, lights and power supply and wifi too, but its all enough for us though. The food is the main theme for Uehara Pension, the owner/chef prepared hearty dinner and breakfast, I would say if you prepare to stay in Uehara Pension, you have to take the 1 stay and 2 meals package, instead of room only. Owner Kiyotaka Takeuchi and his wife were very kind and friendly, also attentive to every your need, even though we did not attend to the hair dryer at the end of the corridor, instead we asked for another one, she was so kind to offer us another one.…
