The Hyatt it is not, but if you like a very unique, homey, nicely updated historic courtyard folk house perfectly located within the fortress walls, you will really enjoy this place. I loved this guesthouse the moment I stepped foot into the lobby! Such a homey feel and traditional look that just continued on into the rooms! The staff were very friendly and spoke good English. This is probably the best value in Pingyao. It's really an inn rather than a hostel, and a cut above the rest in town. Rooms are $30, $45 and $60 U.S. (ignore what Trip Advisor says about $11). We visited the nice little town of Pingyao in April 2009. We stayed there for two days, including one night in the Tian Yuan Kui Hotel, at 73 Nan Da Jie. Since the old town of Pingyao is not very big, one or two days is enough to get a good impression of this authentic town, with its fully intact... more

Great experience. Wonderfully attentive staff. Very good food. Not cheap. But the location in the old city was extraordinary. Not everything worked well, but the staff went way out of their way to fix it. more

The Tianyuankui Guesthouse in Pingyao was the best place I stayed in the whole of China. The people were lovely, the rooms exceptional and the atmostphere friendly and homely. The food was great, especially the local Shanxi dishes, and so are the european-style breakfasts. I wish we'd stay there more than two days - and only wish all budget accomodation... more
