The guest house has an ideal location right in the middle of the ancient town / city of Pingyao close to the large tower astride the main street. We were met by Alice who was very helpful and spoke excellent English. The rooms are all set inside a small maze of courtyards - in fact one of the most memorable... More

We stayed here for five nights. We arrived when it was dark which felt very bustling and magical. The guest house is very basic and authentic. We loved the massive beds and the open showers. The food is really good here. It does get busy with tour groups. The staff are hit and miss, some of them just slob around... More

November 2013 was our 3rd stay at this lovely hostel/guesthouse/hotel and we were just as thrilled as on the other previous occasions in 2003 and 2007. The owner/manager, Rainbow, and her staff are marvellous -professional and courteous; the restaurant provides delicious meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) at very reasonable prices and table service is very professional; the restaurant and bar... This hotel is in the centre of the old town so ideally placed for site-seeing. It has an old world charm with its inner courtyards. Don't expect too much from the rooms - they are extremely tiny and rather depressing. The walls are painted black for about a metre and a half from the floor. The bathroom is fully tiled... More

The rooms were lovely, nicely furnished. Check in was fast and all the staff spoke some English. The service can be a bit hit and miss. Some of the girls were helpful and friendly. However, a male member of staff asked us to move tables as an Asian woman wanted to sit in our seat which really annoyed us.

Tian Yuan Kui is not perfect, but I keep bringing guests here. This visit, I made more effort to check out some of the alternatives, and still feel that this is the best option. This is a small hotel, not a hostel. The big draws are the charm of the courtyards, the comfortable restaurant area, and the location in the... More

The Tian yuan kui hostel in Pingyao is an interesting mixture of traditional and modern. The staff were extremely lovely and the food was tasty. The hundreds of recommendations on A3 sheets on the wall in English, French, Italian, Spanish and other languages were also testament to that. Our waitress wrote out one of the Chinese dishes in Pinyin for... More

Tian Yuan Kui Hostel might also be called a hotel instead of hostel. It is perfectly located in the middle of the old town and it is frequented by many travel organisations. So be prepared to find many tourists from everywhere. The room we had was very clean and had a good and clean recently renovated spacious bath room. The... More
